I picked up a Forge World Sicaran Battle Tank recently and painted it on and off. It's a nice little kit, I like it a lot. No interior, no lights, just a straight up vehicle to airbrush.










So. I usually use Citadel paints, but for this one I used Minitaire (mostly). I primed white with Vallejo Surface Primer, and then did a basecoat of Minitaire Nebula Red, and shading of Minitaire Innards. I did the metallics with VMA Gunmetal, and did a highlight from overhead with VMA Steel. Then I did the burn effect with Minitaire Ghost Tints - orange, magenta, and then purple working towards the tips. All of the washes were Les Bursley homemade with Liquitex inks.

The paint went on like a dream, no thinning, just from the bottle right into the Sotar. It only took about 3 days from opening the package to taking this pictures.

I did the paint chipping with a sponge. I did not (yet) use weathering powder on the treads, but I still may.

That being said, there is one minor screwup - the paint is too light, by far. It really doesn't match the tone of the rest of my army at all; they really are more of a brick red. I think I can justify the change in hue by it being from a completely different era, or perhaps that's just how it came out after they repainted it from whatever chapter they stole it from were gifted it from.



Still, I'm pretty pleased with how it came out.

Nice job on the paintjob! Really liking the effects on the end of the barrels. I do see what you mean about the colour mismatch though - colour seems a bit pinkish on my monitor. You might be able to go back and airbrush some of the main body with a really thinned down dark red to give it an overall tint. Should help in unifying the model with the rest of the army.

I don't know if you've ever watched the television show The Wire (and if you haven't, you should) but at one point a character is framed for a murder. He talks to a police officer, who believes him. When the officer starts digging into the murder (which is "solved"); his sergeant chews him out, screaming "We don't turn black into red!". That's a reference to the whiteboard that shows all the murder cases being worked, where black is considered "solved" and being wrapped up, and red is open/unknown perp.

Anyway, that's how I feel about my Warhams. I have so much stuff unpainted that combined with how slowly I paint, I really don't turn black into red, in that I don't revisit models once dullcote is on unless there is some absolute enormous problem that really requires it. My nonexistant photography skills might make it look worse than it is; as in normal room lighting it doesn't look pinkish, it just looks a little lighter than the others. I can live with it and lesson learned about the color matching.


On the plus side, if I ever do Blood Angels, I have a good scheme.

Right? I was super impressed with my mad skillz but the truth is any fool with an airbrush can do it in less than 10 minutes. All you need is to prime the gun in some gunmetal shade, then do minitaire ghost tints: do the end half in orange, then go over that half again with magenta, then have again with purple. The Minitaire paints themselves are OK - some colors are awesome, some are problematic - but I think the Ghost Tints are amazeballs and everyone with an airbrush should pick up at least some of them.

JK. That paint job looks ok, and I too have a model or two that is out of sync. Just a quick question, did you cut those crests on the tanks yourself? I am Interested in putting it on my own Predator or Land Raider.

I printed out a blood raven logo on paper, stuck it to some plasticard with double-sided tape, sculpted the little gem in greenstuff, and then made a mold and just cast up a bunch of them in resin. If you pull them from the mold a tiny bit early, when they're just a little soft, you can bend them around things as I did with the Terminator storm shields.

I have a few different sizes of them now.

I do like the end result there. My own blood ravens have varied at times in hue; I can never find a red I'm 100% satisfied with (or bone for that matter), I wouldn't fret much over it; it still blends with the army if a touch bright.

It'll only be blatant when you've got a big concentration of forces like that, the rest of the time, I wouldn't expect anyone to notice.

Damn, the group shot makes the thing look hella impressive. Hadn't even considered ownign one of those but now you are making it a tougher decision...

Great work, shame about the colour difference.
