If they are 10 they can be splitted into two 5man squads due to the combat squad rule.

So would it be better to run in them in squads of 1 each and just keep them together until i feel like splitting off or is keeping them in squads of 5-10 better?

You realise that only ICs can (usually) join other units, yes?
So a soladin (solo paladin) is by himself. He cannot join other units, and can be joined by ICs.
When you have 5 you get to pick heavy weapons. If you find that a bonus, then you have your answer.
A common 1500 paladin list from 5th ed, in the UK, had the second troops choice makde up of a single paladin, with hammer, and 10 paladins as the other troops choice.

Yes I realize that, when I said keep them together I meant physically on the table, not 'in a squad'. That is interesting; any reason for the lone paladin?

Because you need two troops and he's a cheap option.
That list works because it's a tough to shift deathstar with extremely effective shooting supported by the rest of the list.

Cost. The deathstar (libby, draigo, apoth led paladins, psycannon, psybolt ammo) is hugely points heavy, with the rest taken up with 2 psyfirlemen. Thast means only 55points left over for the second mandatory troop.
