So my wonderful wife got me a stormtalon, landraider and a mounted wolflord for xmas. The stormtalon arrived today and as I started opening the box in excitement I didn't bother to think, can I even use this lol. She bought it cause she thought it looked cool! I tryed reading the gw faq, but it seemed a little general in my opinion. So I'm asking those with greater knowledge then I. My gut says in freindly games it wouldn't be an issue, but I figured you guys could point me in the right direction.

If it is not in the codex (or added via FAQ or supplement) it is not allowed. The only way for it to work would be to take some allies.

Yes I wasn't sure if the death from the skies supplement had any info on it, as I don't own it. So many co flicting opinions I figured better to ask.

Well there's that Flyer fomation with 2 ST and SR, but thats not in the main so yes it is allies. Currently better than C,SM tax, because its a formation and can take more than 1 of each.

I haven't read the thing, yet, varying comments I've seen indicate that is that Ace is correct - the new Digital Dataslate, "Adeptus Astartes Storm Wing" can be used by Space Wolves. However, as of yet, that's the only way we can use any flyers, meaning that you'd have to get another Storm Talon and a Stormraven in order to use the one you've got.

For 120 points on top of the storm talon you can fill the allies foc requirement with a naked librarian and min unit of scouts. Not the greatest use of points, perhaps, but the cheapest way to use that talon with your army. Edit: assuming you weren't already using allies, that is...

Yup no allie's as of yet! Was actually thinking IG for my allie's at some point, but im not sure now. Gonna be playing a 1500pt game next weekend against a buddy of mine, and im gonna see how my newly acquired force hold's up and do some tweaking from there. Im more in it for fun, then going all crazy with comp. list's and such.

You can always set it aside and work on the other models. At some point the doggies will get updated to 6th and it might be included then.
Or you could trade it for something else.

"Death from the Skies" mentions Space Wolf aces, doesn't it? There's been a lot of rumor-mongering that the Vlka may get a flyer of their own in addition to flyer rules in the new Codex... though there's some speculation that the new Codex may not be until next Fall. I'm hoping the Spring rumors might be accurate, though.

This is what I've done with the Storm Talon and Storm Raven, building and painting everything else waiting for the new Codex

If I run out of other things to build and paint I may build them but not paint yet so that they are ready to paint when the Codex comes out

Yeah i've already built mine, and basecoated it in The Fang lol. Guess ill hold on to it for a bit, see what happens with the new codex.

Maybe work towards this, as a formation, it does not need to be taken with anything else ( HQ,Troops and such ).

TMK SW dont like to fly. So no ST or SR unless allied. In a basement game I wouldnt care.

Dataslate formation is probably your best bet... or ally in a Libby, 5 scouts, and a StormTalon (or whatever floats your boat).

GWs logic befuddles me sometimes lol. Cant use a single st but 2 with a raven is fine. Ohhh well thanks for the info guys. My landraider just got delivered so I'm sure ill live lol.

Bit confused here, Can't only Codex: SM benefit from Storm wing formation? How do you get SW on there. Is there more than one formation? Hard to keep up with all this stuff. -edit- Thought you would have to ally with SM... then SW can't embark

Hi Nem - you can't put Wolves in the Storm Raven, but you can add the Storm Wing formation to any army as a detachment, best used with a Battle Brother type army and all the Smurfs are BB with Wolfies

Um... Well, you see... Formations! Yeah, formations that's why.

GW rule spinners can be awfully dumb sometimes.

Here's a question regarding Formations:
Do the units in the formations count toward their slots as presented in the parent book?
For example, if I take the Stormwing, do the Stormtalons count as Fast? And does the Stormraven count as Fast (in GK) or Heavy (in SM)? Or do they not count as anything at all?

This would be a potential issue with the Tau Formation, where Broadsides could hold objectives in Big Guns. But if they don't count as Heavy, then it wouldn't matter at all.

If it doesn't say "Stormtalon is Fast Attack" or "Broadside is Heavy" in the Formation Rules, then it wouldn't be. As a Marine player with a Tau Formation, I'd have no way of knowing what slot a Broadside is in the Tau codex, unless the Formation specifies what it is.

I am fairly certain they do not count as fast/heavy/etc. They are not part of a detachment that uses those designations.

I think they can use it with Escalation being out now. At least that is what I saw in a FAQ.
