So how much terrain is the right amount? I'm moving into Malifaux from 40k, and wondered how much and what sort of terrain to go for. Starting on a 3' by 3' with 30-35 soulstone games to get the hang of it.

thanks, grrr

More than you suspect. I'd say my henchmen tend to put down, oh, 50% coverage, between pillars, low walls, a few buildings, etc...

Short of Infinity, Malifaux requires the densest terrain for a really great experience. Too little and certain ranged units will just prove stupidly over-powered.

So a fair amount of LoS blocking stuff as well as lots of cover?

Yep, I play with a very dense board. 8" is usually about the largest gap between pieces, usually play with forests, buildings, walls, occasional column etc.

I played an EXTREMELY dense game -- Mei Feng vs. Jakob Lynch -- about a week ago where we had a cluster of buildings that completely blocked LOS from one side of the board from the other, and only had enough space between some of the buildings for a 50mm base (give or take)... we ended up having an epic alley fight where I, playing Mei, voluntarily killed one of my Metal Gamin so Kang could step up and pound on an Illuminated. Huggy's Incorporeal was super awesome, and annoying, with that much terrain.

I'd do it again, though.

Play with whatever sets the environment the best. My first game I played we set it up so it was like an abandoned train depot and there were difficult terrain rails all over the place (including one that cut across the entire edge of my deployment zone). It was annoying at some times, but all in all it was great.

How are you gentlemen. All your base are belong to us.

This is one of the few important things about heavy terrain: I feel like you shouldn't go overboard if one side has a distinct advantage. One henchman is fine, but I'd still be cautious about a full Kirai crew in that dense of a board, for instance.
