Subject: The Avatar - best ways to use him?

Ran my fancy new FW Avatar in a doubles tournament on the weekend, and he did pretty well. He didn't kill much, but he scared many people, and soaked up/tied up well above his points for most of the 3 games.
I feel like he's too slow to be a real threat, but ignore him at your peril! If you can manage to Battle Focus him up close enough he can deal some serious damage... But even if he never fires a shot, he's going to tie up shooty/assault units that would otherwise be shooting far more fragile things... It sounds kinda cruel to let such a badass (fluff and stats wise) be a disposable meat shield, but he does a pretty damn good job of it...
What does Dakka think? Any unconventional successes using him out there?

Doesn't he make Eldar units fearless? Sounds good for horde o' guardians. Now that guardians don't suck.

Yeah he does. But I wouldn't want him just sitting back with guardians on an objective. If I was wanting to make something fearless it would be something up in assault where he can be a real threat as well. But then, Eldar units failing leadership is pretty rare, so it's not a game changer. Stacking him up with exarch powers could get fun though...

A CC themed army? Run the Avatar and Striking Scorpions and Banshess all at the enemy at the same time?
(Just kidding about the Banshees, LOL!)

I've seen quite a few threads about the Avatar and never is enough credit given to the fact that he can get a Melta that has to get two 1's in a row to actually miss; oh and you get 2 shots with it. He also gets to shoot it after running.
If there is a Battlewagon with Boyz, Landraider with Storm Shield Terminators or a Vindicator about to get in range to pie-plate whoever it feels like, the Avatar can reliably 1-shot all of them and, in the case of passengers, expose a lot of them to your guns.
Yes the 12 in. Fearless unit bubble is very useful, too.

Not to mention that he's a blender in CC aside from all that.
I recommend Farseer support, get fortune and you're absolutely golden.

Sure he's great in CC but what I found is it's pretty hard to get him into it, considering the amount of fire he attracts...

The old Get-Down-Get-Up strategy. Position everyone 13" from the avatar every turn. If shot, everyone goes to ground. On your next turn, move the avatar first, now everyone is fearless and cant be to ground. Proceed to move and shoot everyone normally. Only problem is if the avatar dies, so its only useful in smaller point games. Overall, hes not very good. Last edition he was just as survivable with 4W 4++ and 155 points, but now hes just bad for an eldar army at 5W 5++ and 195 points. BS5->10 is irrelevant considering they also removed his heavy flamer, making his shooting actually worse.

He is awesome in Apocalypse if you take the Phoenix Lords of Khaine Formation. He gets 1 extra attack per Phoenix Lord, so 10+ attacks. And all of his shooting has increased range. Cast fortune on the court, and they will tear thru anything in assault.

This is hilariously expensive pointswise and hilariously powerful. My court + 2 farseers just tore through everything. Having 2 Phoenix Lords with 4+ invulnerable saves (and Eternal Warrior) to tank hits helps too.

The avatar is best used as a fire magnet as you have discovered. You just straight rush the nearest nastiest thing and hope he makes it. If he dies eating fire, he did his job and the rest of your army can be shielded 1-2 turns. Avatar is also fairly hard to ignore unless your playing against a very fast army.
Always take fast shot, always. Avatar does not always make combat, but you can reliably get into shooting range and double tap BS10 melta guns.
While uncommon, if you wind up against blood angels, sisters or salamanders, the avatar is nearly unstoppable as a good potion of their heavy weapons can't touch him.

I have used him the same way the OP had success with him, as a big scary bullet magnet. He will live long enough to allow the rest of your army to pound the enemy into the dust. I am hoping one day he'll get across the board and get into enemy lines, but so far his deaths have always resulted in a victory for the Eldar!

Just like my Wraithknights HUGE, scary bullet magnets. Either they soak up shooting in which case I win, or you ignore them in which case I win. Either way...

Unfortunately, I see both quite a bit. I just feel the wraithknight is more fairly priced.

The Avatar did amazing for me when i entered the school league. My list was nice and simple, 2 Wave serpents and an Avatar make an easy 595pt army. It gave practically no chance for giving away first blood. The tactics where rather simple to, Wave Serpents shoot down transports and chaff, Avatar murderizes everything else. And it worked! Small arms fire was worthless and the enemy had to target his limited AV at either the serpents or the Avatar, effectively sparing both. In those games, the Avatar died once and i had no losses. The Avatar died to Vect, which is totally understandable considering he on a bad day he was still doing 3 wounds a turn. Anyhow the Avatar thrives in a target 'rich environment' forcing the enemy to choose what to fire it's heavy weapons at, especially at low points when such weaponary is limited anyhow.

I also find the Avatar to work well in a army that includes wraith units.
Wraithlords/Knights are a similar threat to him, and are likely to attract the same firepower. Same goes for Wraithguard/blades, who are T6 too, and also fearless. Such an army consisting of wraithguard with a spiritseer, lords/knights with some guardian blobs thrown in can be completely fearless and have some decimating firepower up close. While the avatar is able to break any of the above units out of combats they are getting bogged down in.
