I'm looking for fluff reasons that chaos and tau would form a permanent war band, has it ever happened in cannon? And if not, what are some reasons that they could be bros? Lemme know what you think and hit me up with any and all imaginative ideas for inspiration! I know this is tricky because of Tau's immunity to the warp, but i know you folks have a stronger imagination than I.

Chaos claims they're righteous insurrectionists rebelling against the totalitarian Imperium. Then immediately proceed to vivisect the Tau forces when they're no longer of any use. Should probably work.

Tau approach Chaos for support in clearing an Imperial sector. The Black Legion demands they can strike down all Imperial iconography after they are done. Both sides win.

Really? I was under the impression they had ten thousand railguns pointed at warp entry points near their sector, that's really great to know! Thanks for the feedback mates!

An obvious show of Chaos would alert the Tau, but I think the proper application of an insidious Chaos cult would easily appeal to the "Greater Good" with it's wishes to derail the Imperium and it's dogma. By the time they realize they have been duped, it's too late and they probably already served their purpose to the Chaos warband.

I seem to remember some piece of fluff where a shasO was debriefing after battle & he's all like 'The strange creatures were chanting the name Slaanesh! Suddenly a great warrior stepped forth, I thought 'This must be Slaanesh himself! Slaanesh was no match for our superior technology' or something. Then the kroot who were eating the dead chaos worshippers start mutating & have to be put down or something.
Dunno if it's been retconned, but the old line in the fluff was that the Tau couldn't really be possessed, and weren't very susceptible to chaos because they're all blanks, (that is to say, they have no presence in the warp). However, while a Lord of Change couldnt possess an etheral, theres nothing to stop one slaying and impersonating one. Leading Tau 'for the greater good', in the form of an ethereal, but actually serving the ends of its patron deity.

Lesser Daemon of Chaos
|
I too remember the amusing story where the Tau commander thinks he has killed Slaanesh. The Kroot (unlike the tau) are corruptable, in the same story the Kroot that ate the tainted chaos dead, were themselves tainted and had to be put down by the Tau.
Really simple way of putting is read Fulgrim, the Tau attitude to chaos is near identical to the 30k imperium. In Fulgrim, to us, the reader, it is obvious that the Laer are Chaos worshippers, however to the Emperors children they are simply a stupid deluded race that still believes in religion. They then proceed to expose almost ever damn person of importance to the Laer temple and allow the influence of Slaanesh to burrow it's way into the expedition fleet.
Most Chaos marines are so warlike they probably attack the Tau on sight, prompting the Tau to treat them as a race incompatible with the Greater Good. However that's not to say a smart Chaos Lord couldn't strike up a bargain and trick the Tau into helping them.
The Tau tolerate the Kroot tendency to devour corpses of the fallen even though they find it distasteful. I'm sure that in exchange for a powerful alliance, a pragmatic Tau commander could turn a blind eye to some ritual sacrifice as long as the Chaos Marines hold up the pretense of doing for the GG.

Uhh... No.
Despite what some people seem to believe (if they haven't read the farsight enclaves supp.) farsight is not controlled by demons. It was a relativity reasonable suggestion (ignoring the fact that tau have tiny psychic signatures, and there are no known cases of demons possessing a tau), Farsight is most definitely not controlled by demons according to the supp, and in point of fact, has some pretty potent anti-demon/anti-warp stuff. His sword is kind of "demonic-ish" but it is probably necrtyr.

This. IIRC, I don't even think the Chaos Gods have really acknowledged the Tau before or care too much about them.Farsight being possessed or having a daemon sword would be a weee bit outlandish and a big step for one of the gods to take. That and Necron blades are used by the Imperium, so it's not unreasonable for a Tau commander to gain access to such tech. Plus unlike the IOM, it wouldn't be bogged down in dogma surrounding the use of xenos tech.

Yeah, tau are completely open to using other peoples' tech if it is worth it (and doesn't blow up in the users face 1/6 of the time ). They got the basis of their ion technology from dermiug mining lasers, and (although I'm not quite sure about this. Or it might have been retconned) I think they got some of their warp jump technology from a ancient crashed alien ship (probably human, although it might be from one of the numerous other races).

The Tau force lands on a planet, renegade from the oppressive Ethereals in search of non-censored interwebs content. Chaos Space Marine land on said planet looking for fuel and technicians to repair their ship, which was badly damaged by a Warp Storm. When they contact, both sides need something, and trade is upheld.
As soon as this starts, Ultrasmurfs land and proceed to pretend to be awesome all over the place. Tau and Chaos refuse to put up with more of their fawning over themselves.
Shenanigans ensue.
Somewhere in the Warp, Tzeentch sniggers and snorts out a humble "Just as Planned", as he reads through his teenage years diary, watching his one of his earliest works coming to fruition.
