I always wanted to have shipping containers as part of my gaming terrain but when i was looking for some they always were either too expensive or i didn't like the look of them so i thought it would be good idea to make some myself. I'm planning to build one container then make a silicone form of it and cast in resin as many of them that i'll need.

Are you going to cast it as one piece with the ground side as the top of the mould, and put a slab of foamcore board in as filler?

Yes, it'll be cast as one piece but insted of using foamcore i'll fill the resin shell with liquid foam, when it fully expand the foam is durable and very light. It's the best way of doing big casts imo as you get all the details with resin and rigid structure with foam.

I'm just using a old brush to "paint" the resin on the form, i keep doing that untill it harden.

Very cunning. I had not thought of that method.

How fast does your resin cure?

What's the minimum you can mix and get consistent curing? I found I had to mix about 40 grams minimum to make my Tyranid bases.

I suppose there is quite a bit of surface area to cover in a container shell.

I'm using enough of resin to make around 0,5mm layer, that's enough for it to do not crack but it's very flexible with that thickness, don't really know how much is needed for the layer to be rigid without backup.

When i was casting couple of hills for a friend i used around 30g of resin per hill and those are around 25% bigger that container so now i think 20g will be enough.

First casts of the containers are ready, i'm pretty happy with the result of it. Now just need to cast more and paint them

They look great! Planning on painting them a particular colour or different colours for each? Would look pretty awesome if you get a decent rust effect on them too.

I was thinking about different colours on most of them, don't know about the rust though.

Thats awesome.

Would you mind sharing a pic of the mold, and of the foam filling?

thanks

Very nice! Ever thought of making one with a hole blown throughit for enterable terrain?

Thank you VERY much for sharing.

And you just "paint" your resin on the inside, similar to the coating process of rotocasting?

I usually do pressure casting, and have no experience with this, but have always wanted to give it a try.

I am going to guess that by physically brushing the resin into a lot of the cavities you are able to reduce the air-bubbles quite a bit.

Is this the case, or do you get a lot of microbubbles?
(did not see any in your pics).

The process goes like this (english isn't my mother language but i describe it as best as i can, hope that's enough to understad it):
- i pour the resin into the mold,
- then i'm using toothpick to spread it in all tiny details like hingles on the door, that also removes bubles,
- then i'm doing similar to rotocasting, just turning the mold around so resin can flow everywhere, i'm doing that till it start gelling but it's still in liquid state (the point when it start flowing slower),
- then i'm using brush to paint it till it stop flowing down.

And about the bubles, i almost don't get any and if there are some they are so small that even paint can cover them.

Thank you very much.

I had often thought about giving this type of casting a try for terrain projects, but was honestly unsure of how difficult it may be.

Your posts have helped a lot, thank you very much for taking the time and effort to share information and answer questions.

Oh, and your English is much better than many native speakers I know....
