http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varangian_Guard So, randomly while I was thinking about the wolfblade, I thought that they sounded familliar.
Vikings (in space) serving far away from their homeland (world). Both of them seem pretty alike. Anyone else thought about this?

Very plausible as a source of inspiration. Good catch!

Very plausible indeed.
After all, the SW primarch is Leman Russ, so GW is probably getting some inspiration from the Varangians.

Correct, the obvious clue is that the VI are allied to House Belisarius, and Flavius Belisarius will be a name familiar to anyone interested in the military history of the Eastern Roman Empire

For anyone interested in such things, check out Medieval History Magazine.

Not that I'm aware of.

The Komnenoi were running show by the late 11th century and, apart form a brief interlude where the Anegloi were on the throne, the Palaiologoi held the purple until the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Still I could be wrong

You might mean Basileus, which was used by the greek speaking Byzantine Empire as title for their emperors. (in a wider meaning Basileus was used for various kings and monarchs in classical times but during medieval times the Basileus was usualy the Byzantine Emperor ).

Belisarius was the name a byzantine general who aquired much fame in the possibly counter productive ( The roman empire reconquered a large part of it's lost territories but exhausted itself ) wars of his even more famous emperor Justinian

You are confused. Basileus is also the title for a Greek emperor in crusader kings 2, not Belisarius, as the post above describes.
