I'm building a small squad of LotD to use as a back line harasser to get things like artillery, tanks, long fangs, dark reapers, etc. I was thinking of the following load out:
Sgt: combi grav, fist or maybe axe, grav pistol/plasma pistol
plasma gun

But I'm not sure what to do for the heavy. Plasma cannon seems to synergies well, but I find it unreliable because of burning and scatter. Maybe multimelta? What do you think?

Combi Grav, Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon is IMO the best.

Ignore cover mleta or plasma are pretty much the go to right now.

2 options as I see it:

1-combi melta, meltagun, multimelta.
2-combi plasma, plasma gun, plasma cannon.

Though if they could take a grav cannon, then combi-grav, grav gun, grav cannon would have benn the best.

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

An Ignores Cover Plasma Cannon is nice, but a single small blast leaves something to be desired with scatter and all. Feels a little bit too unreliable for me, unless you're using it to target Riptides, in which case you probably want a MM anyways for the better Strength and versatility against vehicles. If you're not running Vulkan, then the other two weapons can be either plasma or melta depending on which targets you want to go after. Plasma will do a job on heavy infantry and MCs that aren't Wraithknights with their increased number of shots over melta. For vehicle hunting, melta all the way. I do run Vulkan, so my loadout is melta, combi-melta, MM.

^ Except that LotD don't benefit from chapter tactics. Trust me, I wish they did!

I am echoing plasma gun/cannon here. Never actually used it, but it sounds very good on paper. If you're worried about the scatter, throw an Inquisitor and some servo skulls in there, and that will reduce your deep strike scatter as well.

Vulkan's melta buff isn't part of a chapter tactic, it's just a buff from him.

Back in 5th Ed Marines when LoTD were terrible, I used to run them with a Meltagun and Multi-Melta. When I felt generous, I slapped a power weapon on the squad.

Its was a solid, if noncompetitive. The small unit could threaten pretty much anything in the back-field with 2 Melta weapons and power weapon. Its not that the unit was bad at all its just they were over-priced in the last edition. With the 6th Ed however...

What amuses me, is that the default WYSIWYG configuration: Sgt with Power Axe/Plasma Pistol, Multi-melta, and Melta-gun is really good for it's pts. Ignore cover melta/plasma is the mutt's nuts this edtion. The Sgt swinging at Int 1 isn't as bad as it sounds, because of the ++ save. Overall, I have found this set-up works for me in my list. (They come in and go after a TFC/LF/or random tank.)

Try it out and see what you think, hope it helps.

Cheers

Thats not the default layout i'm seeing. No heavy weapon and a flamer. And the Sgt as you said.

I have had a lot of non-competitive success with plasma cannon, plasma gun, and combi-plas. But I have been toying around with the idea of HB, grav, combi-grav.

I have not been the person I was since I stopped being him.

Legionaries can't take grav guns, otherwise that would be the default choice, like with bikers.

Does no one else see a relentless multimelta which ignores cover and has reliable deepstrike as a little broken?

Can take a combi-grav though!

best imo is multi melta, melta gun, and combi melta if you have extra Points.

Their ability to ignore cover extends to gun emplacements like Quad Guns as well

@rodgers37, I really don't understand yer post mate?

Maybe the confusion is that I bought the metal set when 5th Ed dropped, and I just assumed that was the default WYSIWYG model set-up.

Whatever though. The set-up I use is just $ in the bank for it's pts. My Marine buddies hate it, not so much the Tau'dar though!

Cheers
