Subject: First army w/limited resources - 250/500/750 Escalation League

I am just getting back into the hobby and my FLGS is having a "Badab War" Escalation League starting on the 2nd, although I'm not sure what specifically makes it Badab War as Xenos forces are allowed and we aren't limited to the actual forces used during the war.
As I'm getting started again, all I have at my disposal for the moment is the Space Marine Strike Force boxed set, which contains:
* 1x Captain
* 1x Command Squad
* 1x Razorback
* 1x Dreadnought (Venerable but could use it as a regular I suppose)
* 5x Scouts
* 20x Marines (i.e. 2x Tactical Squads)
* 5x Assault Marines
* 1x Drop Pod
For the league we are starting at 250 points using the new Kill Team rules (which I don't actually have so only partially sure how they work), then the following week having 500 points, then the week after 750; we might have another month of the league going up to 1500 points but for now its capping at 750.
Having not played in 10+ years I'm not quite sure what makes for good composition right now and with limited models it compounds it even more, but is there anything I can make out of the above models (until I can get some more things) to stand a chance at 250, 500 and 750 points?
I am planning on doing a DIY Chapter, the "Ardent Guard" so I have almost free reign to pick tactics and the like; I was going with Imperial Fists as that fit the theme, but Iron Hands (minus the cybernetic fluff) or even good old Ultramarine tactics can suit my vision of the chapter as well. I'm not adverse to other chapters as well but I liked the idea of creating my own, and I don't own the Badab War supplements anyways.
Any advice for a still confused newbie at these points levels? I can maybe pick up some other miniatures before the 500 and 750 points, but for the 250 I'm basically limited to the Strike Force box as that's the extent of my collection right now.

At 250 Points Kill Team, you could go with
5x Assault Squad - 110 pts
Power Axe Sergeant w/ Shrouded Special Rule
Flamer Guy w/ Fleshbane Special Rule
Flamer Guy
Marine

5x Man Tac
Sergeant
Plasma Cannon Guy w/ Relentless Special Rule

Well I won't have a plasma cannon as the tactical box only has a missile launcher (the next thing I plan on buying is a devastator squad for additional heavy weapon marines to swap out) and right now the only models that I have is what's in the Strike Force boxed set.
I had read elsewhere, 1d4chan I think, that Assault Marines were not really good (or close combat in general in 6th edition). Was considering a Scout squad with sniper rifles, but having not played in over ten years I am not sure if the assault squad would be better for the kill team.

Assault Squads aren't very good in Close Combat, With 3 Attacks and 1 Hammer of Wrath on the charge, however, they bring speed. In Kill Team that is extremely important. The assault squad also lets you take two Flamers or Plasma Pistols. You can also take a Power Weapon on the Sergeant making him very strong. A Scout Squad would be best, however, 5 Scouts can't fit the points very well. I also realize that I posted a 200 point army, not a 250 point army. 5x Scouts - 70 pts w/ Sniper Rifles/Cloaks 180 More Points You could add 10x Man Tac w/ Combi Plas, Missile, Plasma Gun

I'm curious as to why you would give one of the flamer guys the fleshbane special rule? Fleshbane only applies to CC attacks, not ranged attacks.

It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies. |
