I love the thought of taking a lot of tanks and aircraft on the field. But is taking an armored battle group list a dick move?
I don't want to be "that guy", who must win every single game. You know, the guy who brings tournament style lists to even friendly games (the 4 heldrake or 3 riptides cheese guy).
Is it one of those lists that pose a challenge but not way over powered...or is it a stomp face I must win style?

The ABG list is pretty weak. Sure, it can cover the table in AV 14 tanks, but if you do that you have no scoring units (and since they're all troops and HQ you don't even get scoring units when heavy support is scoring) and will lose most of your games. And if you take a more balanced list with the weak ABG troops (or allies, I guess) you don't really have more tanks than an average IG list and just get the fluffy upgrades and special tanks.

And of course against real tournament lists like screamerstar or Riptide spam you have very little hope of winning.

But in imperial armor it says that tanks are scoring units.

No, it says that they're troops. Troops are not always scoring units. In fact the introduction to the list even comments on how the fact that tanks don't score forces you into interesting tradeoffs between maximizing your awesome tanks and taking enough scoring units to win the game.

The list is incredibly weak. I play it all the time, with a full sized ten-tank company, but it is very difficult (though not impossible) to win with.

I use a portion of it for allies, just to get a couple more russes. I find my games go well.

indeed...

I use normal guard for the mech infantry, veterans what else, and then ally in the ABG. I still have around 5 or 6 av14 tanks in at 1800/2000pts.

You either fold like paper or you smash face in epic style, I steamrolled a marine army once, I lost 2 tanks but he lost nearly his whole army

Also in one apoc battle we had I helped win by just setting up my army on one flank, they didn't want to face all of those tanks so they charged into the other big guns instead

In normal game sizes (1500-2000pts) you can take just as many tanks as an ABG with superior chimera-vets as troops. You also get access to Vendettas, etc.

The only real advantage to ABG is the veteran crew skills most of which aren't anything special.

Using two detachments or C:IG + ABG allies is much better than just using the ABG list.

If you take ABG as the primary, and C:IG as the allied, you can take this for scoring units:

-Primaris Psyker [70 pts]

-Platoon:
CPS w/Chimera [85 pts]
IG Squad w/Chimera [105 pts]
IG Squad w/Chimera [105 pts]
IG Squad w/Chimera [105 pts]

That's 470 pts, and should be good for up to the 2,000 pts level for scoring, as long ass you hide the men in chimeras behind your Russes until about turn 4/5.

Veteran Crew Skills aren't a thing anymore.

The new list gets access to specialized ammunition, new wargear options, warlord traits, and a tank-only orders system.

It's great fun

Especially when you get a Vanquisher HQ with an option to fire an ID blast shell

At 2000 I used two Primary Detachments, each one with on Command Vanquisher with Beast Hunter shells and a Command Leman Russ with Infernus Shells because I hate Aegis lines

I think it is great at certain point levels, when you go into a 1500 point game with ABG against a player that didn't know FW was legal in your gaming area...it can be a bit of a rude awakening. :-)
