My room-mates and I disagree whether XV88s are too big to gain 25% obscured and a 4+ save from the ADL. What is the publics general consensus?

1). Put it behind the wall.
2). Look at it

Is it 25% obscurred?

Well Grendel, In my opinion it is not as only the puny legs are covered. My friend disagrees and say it is.

The problem is we disagree about it.

That is why I am asking Dakka to "Make Da Call" please, thank you

Measure the legs, if they mount up to 4 legs equal 1 broadside then yes it's covered, simples

With the standard XV88 models I'd say definitely yes unless you're during from an elevated position.

Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.

Yes my Colour is Black but not for the reasons stated mainly just because it's slimming... http://imperiusdominatus.blogspot.com

There's a device called a "measuring tape" that you can use to measure distances - you probably use it to determine range right now but it has multiple uses! :-)

1 Measure the height of the model.
2 Divide by 4.
3 Measure the height of the ADL.
4 If step 3 gives you a number equal to or larger than step 2 the model has cover from the ADL.

NOTE: This assumption is based on a perfectly flat field. Any deviation from that on the firer's perspective is impossible to calculate and predict.

Alright, but the model has other dimensions besides height.

Is only height to be taken into account?

I think the top "half" (if you will) is bigger than the bottom "half". Unless negative space is part of the model.

Best thing to do is sit down with your friend and work out what 25% is.
Calcualte the surface area on one facing if you like.
Water displacement can also be used to calculate volume, stick it in a jug!
Once you have both agreed on where this is, stick it behind the wall.

This is the problem with a lot of models in this edition.

Why GW choose to switch back to percentage-based cover from 5th edition's perfectly simple 'if you're partially obscured, you're in cover' rules, I just can't fathom.

Becuase 5th gave you cover if your left foot was behind a rock, RAW. Not sure this is any better mind you.

Or take a picture and use software to calculate if you want the exact surface 25%.
Heck of a job for not much result though =P

Always remember if you and your opponent cannot agree on whether you get the cover save, you get the save -1(4+ ADL becomes 5+)

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.

And this is where exactly? I'll save you the time to look, it's Not in the book.

Which was easy. You didn't have to try to figure out how much of the model constituted 25%... if the model was partially obscured, it was in cover. Job done.
