The item damage system was put into make banditry less appealing, but that's averted by people just taking their clothes off then being shot. If you know you're going to die you may as well try and avoid it instead of willingly giving the bandit less hassle. Run at them shouting "chickens" or something. =P
apparently if you run into people there is a chance that they will bleed, you may get lucky and take the bandit with you
It seems that the best way to avoid bandits is to not go near Elektro or Cherno, just like the mod.

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

I don't understand why anybody would surrender to bandits, they are likely to kill you anyway. Get your wrench/fireaxe/other weapon out and start swinging! Die like a hero!

Stuff like this could happen

They didn't have masks or anything but they looked like they had been playing for ages. One guy had a clown face in another encounter so I ran from that one.
I noticed if you punch someone they go unconscious pretty quickly though.
Before you stop playing DayZ make sure you are far away from any potential threat. I thought I'd hidden myself away quite well in a city, only to be shot while still loading in. Infuriating, but lesson has been learned.
Anyone get annoyed when you spend 40 minutes getting to airfeilds etc only to have people spawn there, grab gear then spawn on another erver? I have died so many times because people abuse that system.
We once had a guy trapped on a roof after he shot some random guy in the distance. After 15 minutes of guarding the only way down talking we all went silent. 15 minutes later he came up behind us and killed us both. Thats just one example.
I have died less by "ordinary means".
I hope it gets fixed. I may have to dedicate myself to trying to hunt these people down and killing them. But its hard when there is no way of knowing their name.
I always log out in woodland, ideally in a dip in the ground, or at least inside a shed or something similar that breaks LOS and isn't likely to be occupied when you spawn.

That won't ever get fixed, not if you waited for 15 minutes. Server hopping is just one of those things, there isn't really anything that can be done about it. In the mod loot spawning was disabled within a large radius of your characters spawn point but as loot spawns work differently in the standalone even that isn't going to work.
Deer stands have been disabled (I spent an hour attempting to farm them....)

Yea its a pity because now we feel like we have to shoot on sight or be cheated to our graves. They should make someone light up when they spawn without dying (i.e a big bright light to give away their position) unless they have been inactive for a period of time. That will at least give the non hoppers a chance.
Personally I just don't go to the airfields. There isn't much military grade loot in the game at the moment anyway.

There are a couple or good army bases in some small towns that are god knows where. I think they are in the centre of the map, but they are generally unoccupied.
Yeah I tried the deer stand/hunter cabin things for ages before I gave up. Not sure why they don't have items. Would encourage people to spread out of the towns a bit.
I'm not sure why the deer stands have been disabled but its a bit annoying

i usually run along the southern coast towards the west, staying away from towns unless supplies are needed.
going up the West side of the map is pretty safe and easy to do, there is a slightly hidden hospital with military spawns and one of the towns has a small military area. and then its a hop skip and a jump to NW airfield.
usually by the time i make it to NW i have an M4 with some sort of scope and a silencer or supressor, a few hundred rounds of ammo, atleast 2 bottles of water/canteen, a fully stocked medkit and plenty of food.
the last time i was on i had 2 ammo boxes full of m4 ammo and i was ready to take anything on Rambo style, and then the server ate my character.
