Subject: A space marine flyer - where is the point of no return - a limit on colors ??

Hi.
Managed to paint the Nephilim Fighter I assembled when it was new.....poor thing was grey for a while.
Didn't follow the "all is black and some white markings" mantra the 'official' Ravenwing has. Like the rest of the army, they interprete the given colors of the unforgiven very flexibly, but as a successor of the Legion they keep the wings and swords n stuff.
My bird:
It is currently a 'colorful' model, black , white, green and grey plus metal parts. I've seen lots of single color, or twin color models. Am I going too far with 4 ?
Is there a limit of main colors, a "point of no return" a "make or brake" ??

Lose the grey, it looks a bit weird. Black and green with white markings and some metal is enough.

I tend to stick with about three (not including the metal), two main colours and then one for some spots, which isn't seen on any of the large flat areas or such.
Having said that, your one looks really good, and you should paint it however you want. One criticism I have is that it looks a little flat, some washes on the bright colours and highlights on the black would go a long way.

It completely depends on the paint scheme you have in mind. You can have an awesome scheme with 5+ colors (not even counting highlighting/shading as separate colors), and you can have an awful scheme with a single color. What matters more than the number of colors is how well the colors fit together: do they provide interesting variation/contrast, or do they try to draw your focus everywhere at once? Are they applied to sensible locations, or are they randomly splashed across the model? And remember that "colors" is kind of arbitrary. Are two different shades of blue two distinct colors, or just subtle shading? If you have a model with a lot of subdued brown and green shades and some bright white squadron markings do you count all of those browns and greens as separate colors, or just a general "background" to the squadron markings? Etc.
Also, when counting colors you generally don't count detail bits like bare metal on the engines, black and yellow warning stripes (as long as they're small), etc.

This. In general, I think marines should stick with one or two main colors, and then one accent color. Metal/lenses/highlights/etc. excluded.

Looks nice in green. The grey just looks like parts you have not painted yet, not really part of the intended color scheme.

Let me explain the grey... followed the typical aircraft scheme a bit. So upperside and underside may vary. Plus the tail goes for a contrast, black and grey, to break the outline of the vehicle. Isn't the best justification I know.
On the bright side, you people seem to favor 2 or 3 main colors in the Poll. And markings and gear doesn't count it seems.
Another question: the big aquila wings, used by many imperial vehicles, don't count for main colors, yes?

Looks good, but yeah, could use some washes or shading.
I am not sure what the question about the "main colors' on the wings?
I have my own homemade chapter (well, and a few others) with my own scheme....as long as its consistent across my army, it looks great.
So, I guess what ever color the "wings" or other flags/banners/heraldry are in your other parts of your army match these wings, it should be good.
thanks for sharing, looks cool.

I'd paint the top of the tail black...And just highlight the gray on bottom a bit (edge highlighting basically). I actually kind of like the more colors on yours actually.
