Hi Mike, welcome to historical wargaming.

There are many rules for playing games in the Ancient setting (what many people call the pre-medieval times). Two that I can think of are De Bellis Antiquitatis (often DBA) and Hail Caesar by Warlord Games.

The second one seems to be a lot of fun and I've noticed plenty of people getting into it. Warlord Games is also a great place to get models for Romans, Celts and many other forces. Perhaps you could get the starter set - The Conquest of Gaul (http://store.warlordgames.com/collections/hail-caesar/products/hail-caesar-the-conquest-of-gaul-starter-set)

This will give you the rulebook as well as adding 94 plastic miniatures to your army. You'll have some Romans and a lot of Celts to go against them. It might be easier to get games if you have two sides so your friends can play too.

Pete :-)

If you are looking for rules, this is a good starting point - http://www.freewargamesrules.co.uk/

I'd suggest you start small. DBA is a useful starting point if you don;t find a set of free rules you like. There are a number of figure companies - such as http://www.essexminiatures.co.uk/ who will sell you a pack that will give you all the figures you need for the army. For @£50-£60 you can get the rules and two armies, which will allow you to solo game or maybe lure others away from the darkside.

I would look for a club to visit. Most clubs play a variety of games and include Ancients so you would be able to get advice and trial games easily.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

+1 on this.
With a bit of luck you'll find a game with rules you like, with a steady player base, most likely very happy to welcome you!
