Because of the lovely discussion going on in Manchu's World of Darkness characters thread, It's gotten me thinking about getting my hands dirty and starting my own WoD game. The game seems about as different as they can be when compared to my current RPG system (Pathfinder and DnD 3.5). I'm not a great storyteller, and prefer to use pre-made adventures, but from everything that I can tell, that doesn't seem to be White Wolf's MO, so I would much rather play in a WoD game than run one. Unfortunately, I'm my RPG group's de facto storyteller/GM, so I would be running the game.

I currently have the Mage: The Awakening book, and the WoD rulebook. I'd much rather play regular humans than one of the special character, but idk if that's the best place to start.

Any thoughts or advice on starting up a WoD game? I know there are a few vets on Dakka.

Why get started with nWoD when you can enjoy sweet, sweet oWoD?

Oh because you want to play reg'ler humans. Yeah, nWoD is better for that.

I think the best place to be in WoD is the Old World and play as Vampires. One of my favorite games.

I have not played nWoD yet so can't comment on how humans work out there.

Well, I only have the rules for nWoD, so I'm kind of limited there

Me either, I was in a pbp Mage game for about half a second when the GM just up and quit on us due to real life, so I don't even count that as 'playing'

Just one book though, right?

Aren't the oWoD books dirt cheap right now and print on demand?

Do not count out new World of Darkness too quickly. While the classic version has expanded setting detail it is draped in horrible character archetypes based on ethnicity and sex, incongruity between the games rules-wise, and plays more like a dark action comic than a game of horror and deep mystery. The new games are not nearly as replete with those things and the game turns out better for it. You also have a little wiggle room story-wise because they do not spell out the entire world for you to the point of micromanaging everything.

Also, The God Machine.

I feel I would be failing my minor obsession with Werewolf the Apocalpyse if I didn't mention Drivethru.rpg is selling the 20th anniversary edition PDF for WtA at half price as a new year deal right now and have knocked down the PoD version by nearly $30 as well.

Regarding the nwod I actually liked the remake of Kindred and the tightening of the rule set was lovely, but Forsaken soured the whole experience so badly that I sold out all my nwod books I had acquired up until Forsaken's release and never looked back.

Have considered getting the conversion rules PDF a couple of times though, just for a look.

It certainly had a certain 90s charm to it.

Also, even if they spell it out, you don't have to use it. I ran a really great game based in our hometown that used the basics of the setting and expanded from there.

The god-machine and the new demon fluff is awful, the OWoD demon fluff is so much better.

I tend to think the opposite but I don't know much about either Demon. Care to elaborate on your opinion?

OWoD Demons were created after Lucifer's rebellion when God cast all of his angels into an inescapable prison, after millenia of having no physical form they were all quite psychologically damaged but the weakest of the demons manage to escape and take human hosts. It's at this point that the demon can take on a shred of their host's humanity to become a player character, from then on the Demon can strive for redemption (and become more angelic) or accept their damnation (and become more demonic).

NWoD are malfunctioning machines that think they are human.

If people are looking for OWoD books I think Ainsty Castings still probably has everyone of them going for something cheap. My flgs seems to be ridding itself of the NWoD stuff too, but its not angsty enough for my taste. ^^'
