Any tips on basing unit on stone surfaces. I plan to model my hq on top of a moderately tall stone mesa, Would that be MFA?

I use cork sheets . You can tear it and glue it in layers to make a very convincing stone surface. I bought some for 10 dollars and its last me 3 different armies ive based with it.

Only if you're planning on doing it because it gives you an advantage in-game. If you're modeling a unit on a taller base to give it a taller profile for drawing LOS from then that's a pretty cut-and-dry case of modeling for advantage. If you're doing it because it looks cooler and you're willing to draw LOS from where the model would actually be were it glued straight to the base then not so much.

That's exactly what I do with my models, I have painted them in such a way that there is an identifiable mark where the top of the model should be. They are all disguised as part of the unit markings or kill markings but it gives you a visible mark to refer to, especially if you are playing TFG who raises merry hell about MFA, you can even show him your marker line!

I thought you were allowed to base it on some rocks or whatever and wherever the model is is fine.
It wouldn't really be that big of an advantage because if you can see the enemy then they can see you haha.

Cork is definitely the material I would go with, paint grey a few different dry brushes and BAM rocks

When players do it, it's MFA.

When GW does it, it's making money.

Regarding the MFA question, it would depend on how much height it would gain ...if its less than 1/4" an inch, I think most people would not care.
