Hey Dakka. I've been reading articles on the site for a few months now, and looking at some of the awesome images in the gallery, and decided to sign up.

I'm new to wargaming. A friend of mine is a long-time 40k player, and he convinced me to give it a try in 2013. We played a low points demo with his models, and then he asked me to think about what army I might be interested in playing. After looking at what was out there, I decided that Orks were the army for me!

My friend primarily plays SM and CSM, so he was amused at my interest in the Orks. (Something about 6th edition being a shooting game or some nonsense?). But he was supportive and picked up the Ork codex for me, and even gave me an extra mini rulebook that he had laying around just to get me started. I scoured eBay for deals and started out with a Warboss and some boyz. My army has grown considerably since then. I have played 15-20 games, and even won a few. The articles and forum posts here on Dakka have taught me a lot, much to the dismay of my opponents. Thank you!

Welcome!

What kind of Ork army are you interested in running? Some of the options 1) you could take Wazdakka Gutzmek, who makes warbikes troops. 2) you could run a massive infantry horde that your opponents won't possibly be able to get rid of.

It is also worth noting that taking a Warboss as an HQ allows you to take a unit of Nobz as troops.

Space Marines, Orks, Imperial Guard, Chaos, Tau, Necrons, Germans (LW), Protectorate of Menoth

I started with the generic Warboss, but have since switched to using a Big Mek with KFF. I don't own any bikers yet, just Boyz, Nobz, Grots, a handful of Lootas, and some Deffkoptas. So far I've been footslogging, and it's been rough, but in low points games (<1000pts) I've been doing OK. With my 5+ KFF save, cover saves, Mob Rule (fearless), and unit spacing I've even made it across the board a decent number of times to do some damage and hold control points. However I know this isn't ideal, so I've been working on scratch building some kannons, trukks, and even a Deff dread to beef up my forces. Nobs are so expensive points wise, but I did recently field a small squad of them with a Painboy (+ Feel No Pain) with great success. Eventually I'll pick up some of the cooler stuff (named HQ's, Nob bikers, a fleet of Battlewagons... ).

Welcome to a new Ork player

I started with Orks. Then I tried Space Wolves, Necrons and Tyranids. And I still play my Orks more than the others and always have the most fun with the Orks.

And that's the best advice for any Ork player IMHO, just have fun with them.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

Thanks all! I appreciate the support. And yes, I'm holding off on any large purchases. I've spent a while building up a core of units. Everything I read says that you can't really go wrong with more boyz, which seems to be true from what I've seen so far.

Scrap from the recycle bin. Milk jugs, yogurt containers, shampoo bottles, ballpoint pen barrels, etc. Not as "professional" looking as using plasticard, but hey it's readily available and the price is right. The trukks have a base chassis from some dollar store tractor toys; and after getting the measurements of the GW trukks I was able to come up with a sufficiently orky conversion. Painted it red, added a few rivets and they're good to go. The kannons are just 5-hour Energy bottles with two milk jug lids on the sides, with some "wheel spokes" cut out to make it look a little more decent. Painted them metallic black and gave them a grot crew and they're done. They won't win any awards, but they're passable for games at my FLGS. Besides, I'm new!
