Just played my first ever game of Warhammer 40k last week and really enjoyed it. While I can't afford models at this time my local group allows proxies so I am making at the correct base sizes poster board cutouts of every unit I will be using. (I use a ruler and compass to cut out the "base" write what it is and the base size on it...then on the blank side I paste a picture of the unit. If they say it needs the height I will be asking for the unit heights and doing something like taking a straw tabbed out then cut to the correct height to place on the unit, but I hope these will work...I am not a very good artist or designer but I am putting a bit of work into them.) I am playing a Necron army. Just saying high and any advice would be helpful.

Thanks I appreciate it. I got the idea from my first experience with wargaming some 20+ years ago. Avalon Hill's Gettysburg. 1/8 inch cardboard cutouts for every unit.

No seriously. Run.
Go find some of the dozens of other games that will not bankrupt you to play.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed. |

Since you play Necrons, a very easy way to save money on models is to use croissants from a local bakery instead of buying the vehicles from GW. Hope this advice helps you out.

LMAO! If we were playing, your flyer would dimish in size quickly! Maybe some crumbs left on the base... How many points for honey butter?

I'll see how cheep they are (the lego men, not the croissants) They might have to wait until next payday...and then I will be getting my first real model too (1 purchase at a time...eventually I will replace all the cardboard.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
Welcome to Dakka.
One thing I do when I want to test units or can't afford them yet is to do a similar thing to what's in your OP, but go a bit further. I use folded paper with the model printed on, hence making it the right height.
All you have to do is cut and paste pics of the model into a word document, put two 30x25mm rectangles end to end and paste the pics into them (heads facing towards the shared edge). Then, do a 10x25 mm rectangle on the end of each larger one.
When you print and cut them out, glue the insides of the larger rectangles together so it forms an upside-down T when you fold out the 'base', and glue that to a 25mm base.
Hope that might be of some help to you.

Great Idea and I will do that for next weekends game. That works for the warriors, Immortals, and overlords. What do I do about the scarabs, Destroyers, C'Tan Shard, and the planes (the Doom Scythe and the Night Scythe use the same model just the Doom Scythe adds a weapon to it)
Also I have found instructions for making paper/cardboard Necron monoliths and pylons but not for anything else.

Scarabs, you'd get away with just a base, as they have such a low profile. The for Ctan shard I'd apply the same principle but bigger (maybe 70-80mm high) and use a bigger pic.
For the planes, as they are quite thin height-wise, they might as well be flat in games terms (the actual height is very unlikely to come into play). So just print them out to the right size (the dimensions should be easy to find) and glue them to card. Then, shove them on a pencil or pen and a base using blu-tack or similar. It's not ideal but if your fellow players are already fine with paper, then they should be fine with that in the short term.
No idea for Destroyers, unless you just apply the original principle to a 40mm base, but that would only work front-on.
