Welcome to the ion kingdoms. Don't forget your goggles and free Phoenix plushie
Where to start? Easy. The answer to this question is always 'the battle box'. Buy this, play lots of games, expand slowly. If you can join an escalation league, then do so. Both factions are fine, ret gets a bit of a doing by some for not being overpowered - it's not true. Ret are fine, though they may lack the sheer diversity of options the 'big four' have due yo their relative youth as s playable faction, but they're solid, and catching up fast in terms of releases.
Don't worry about 'buying stuff that's potent'. Buy the starter, and learn the game first. That you can build into whatever you like.

Start small and work your way up for either faction.
What are you looking for from a faction?

Some fun 'jacks and overall capabilities. Cygnar has the diversity but the elves look so amazing!

Ah, this is a good question indeed since these two happen to be my primary faction to play other than Mercenaries and a Convergence battlebox.
Everyone else has said the right thing to start small with the battlebox and go from there. Personally I prefer Cygnar mainly due to its utilitarian style of play. In a way both factions play similar except Retribution has better stopping power with its melee oriented options in units and warjacks than Cygnar. Cygnar loves ranged combat but does okay in melee depending on the situation.
These are my opinions between the two factions pertaining to my experiences playing both factions over the years.
Both factions have good warjacks. Personally I prefer the reliability of Cygnar over Retribution.
Both factions have decent infantry choices but Retribution has better and harder hitting melee units. Yes I am talking about Dawnguard.
Both factions have solid warcaster choices although Cygnar is more balanced while Retribution requires more finesse and synergy.
Cygnar has better support solos to make a Cygnar more adaptable versus Retribution that has solos geared towards surgical maneuvers mainly for caster assassination.
Cygnar plays as like defensive but aggressive ranged faction versus Retribution plays as a more passive ranged or melee faction.
Cygnar has a slightly steeper learning curve to play versus Retribution which is more forgiving to newcomers to the game. Honestly it took me a while to become inherently dangerous with Cygnar when I played them starting off.
Retribution has regenerative shields on their warjacks while Cygnar has more warjack disrupting abilities.
Retribution has better caster-killing options than Cygnar while Cygnar has neat tricks with its electrical themed weapons.
Both factions look cool asthetically. Retributions are badass wood elves with guns and Cygnar are apparently the only good guys in the Iron Kingdoms that seem to be American-British esque.
Bottomline I think it depends what you're looking for in a faction, whichever fits your playing style and whatever your gut tells you.

Socsteep learning curve with a better toolbox or a more user friendly that you learn finesse and proper order activation. . . . Hmmmmm

Timing is everything no matter which faction you play on warmachine. Some factions are more "forgiving" than others if the order activation isn't exactly timely.
Yeah, tough call. I wish you a lot of luck.

I don't see it as much of a tough call vs how much of a challenge I want. I will likely get a set of both starters and play around with them Automatically Appended Next Post: More information always welcome! Automatically Appended Next Post: How is the pewter for PP? Oregon. Yea it depends on where it was. Guardian Games is one of the biggest FLGS's that I have seen. They recently upped their location and have over 10k sq' !
