What is the current best 40k dex atm? Not in power level but in ability to read and play. I'm just gonna put it out there that Dark Eldar is probably the best I have used. Or dare I say it Tau?

Imperial Guard in my opinion. So much variation and customization in both models and codex choices. Such a cool codex, although not as cool to read as the older ones but im hoping this will change with the new codex.

All the hardcover ones have been awesome. So is the Dark Eldar one.

Maybe it doesn't count, but I would say Horus Heresy Book I: Betrayal.

"Through the darkness of future past, the magician longs to see.
One chants out between two worlds: Fire, walk with me."
- Twin Peaks
"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks

My favorite codex has been Codex: Chaos Daemons

Its great fluff with fun rules and pretty much strong internal balance (except poor khorne units not named hounds :( ). Its got a power build or two, and numerous fluffy builds.

Its a great codex!

I'd say IG as well. It just... makes sense. Well balanced and with, as Swastakowey said, a big range of tactics available.

Current Proposed Rules Project: Orkish AC-130 Spekta Gunship!

WAAAGH Sparky!
1400 (ish) - On the rebound!
Kommander Sparks DKoK
1000 (ish) - Now on the backburner

- Men, you're lucky men. Soon, you'll all be fighting for your planet. Many of you will be dying for your planet. A few of you will be put through a fine mesh screen for your planet. They will be the luckiest of all.

Bold thing to say around here this week!

Objectively, I think I'd probably have to go with Dark Eldar, even though they're not entirely to my taste. That, or, as others have said, the IG codex.

I enjoy the Daemon book. Its very fluffy, great rt style and models, and you can made quite a few unique and / or competitive lists from it. Plus you can sort of count the CSM dex as a dual codex massively increasing your options.

Dark Eldar is still the best codex ever released.
Awesome fluff and very good rules.

I cannot let this pass.

Almost all sentences from the background section of 6th Edition Codex: Chaos Daemons were copy-pasted from the 4th Edition Codex, by Alessio Cavatore. The only think Kelly add were a couple of sentences claiming that there were only four Chaos Gods, not the infinite number of them that previous versions had. Because human beings can only have four emotions, it seems. And Chaos Undivided was thus retconned to oblivion, with characters like Ingethel, Samus, Malal, Perturabo, Lorgar and many others suddenly in a wtf territory.

Credit should be given when and where credit is earned. Kelly just copy pasted the Codex in half an hour, added one single brutal, immense, unnecessary retcon of out not caring for the background and call it a day. The (brilliant) fluff you like is from Cavatore, and was written in 2008.

And I just mentioned Dark Eldar, by Kelly, as best Codex ever, so I am not saying he is an idiot or lacking talent. But he did both Codex: Chaos Space Marines and Codex: Chaos Daemons in a rush. Particularly the background section.

‘Your warriors will stand down and withdraw, Curze. That is an order, not a request. (…) When this campaign is won, you and I will have words’
Rogal Dorn, just before taking the beating of his life.
from The Dark King, by Graham McNeill.

My choice would be surprisingly the new SM.
Variation in fluff and army looks, which also affects your gameplay a lot since it can help you shame your army's identity.
Hardly OP, but will manage. Alright, the internal balance isn't great but... good enough if you ask me.

I'm biased towards Roks in terms of fluff. But I hear that Either Necrons of Tau are the best on the table. Not that Loota spam doesn't work

Meh in terms of comp Tau triptide/O'Vesa/Farsight bombs, Eldar Deer Council/serpent spam and daemon Screamerstar/Belakor flying circle dominate at the moment. I run a screamerstar but I far prefer the Deldar book.

To the above posters HH I & II. Best ever. Game over. New fresh rules. Amazing fluff. Art that's out of this world. Sweet ass new units. I read them over and over. Betrayal is better then Massacre but Massacre is better then any 6th codex.

Betrayal was so amazingly awesome that I'm still not sure if it's an actual GW product. It's so balanced (For both player and opponent not ATSKNF ridiculousness)

I vote Space Marines. I love variety and the codex offers more builds and choices than anything else. Maybe not the most competitive, but that's now why I play. As long as its not totally gimped, I'll love it if its creative and sparks the imagination.
