is there any tu unit that can smash at str 10 and at initiative 10?

That way,then left

Only monstrous creatures smash.
They'd hit at strength 10 alright, but initiative 10 I can't think of in the tau dex.
Care to elaborate a bit?

on the forum. Obviously

That's an oddly specific question.
No, not that I'm aware of. They do get a piece of gear called an Onager gauntlet which makes a single S10 attack, but I don't think it boosts initiative as well.

To my knowledge, no, not outright in any case.
One could probably try and put forth an argument that the R'varna's Fletchett Dispenser Thing could count. The R'varna is a monstrous creature so it has access to Smash and this piece of war-gear gives a unique attack at Initiative 10. I am not going to state this is accurate, not without taking a little more time to research each rule themselves. Actually, it is regrettable and embarrassing to state that I don't know that one rule off the top of my head as I am a Tau player and Devilfish should always have the damn things to protect from close combat attacks. Some people might put forth that it is a unique close combat attack being done, and Smash does apply to all close combat attacks, as I have seen arguments for other pieces of war-gear to count for Smash before....

Right now, without research, I am more inclined to state it would just be a Special Rule that triggers within close combat and is not a close combat attack but I could be wrong.

basiclly I played against Tau and the tau player said tht his commander (forgot the name but there were about 3 of them in a unit with 3 drones) could do a 'smash' attack that made him str 10 and initiative 10 and 2 attacks. Sounded fake but it was a friendly game so I didnt get his codex out and inspect it I just took his word for it.

Smash would not apply to the flechette discharge.

He probably got the initiative wrong.

That may have been the Onager gauntlet. He must have read it wrong. It should have been a single S10 attack at initiative.
I rarely faced it though, so I could be wrong.

Yeah, thats the gauntlet, and he added an extra attack.
Only MC's can smash. Unless it was a Riptide, your buddy played it wrong.

The highest initiative a Tau Commander can have for a normal attack is Farsight at I5. He however is only S5, though has special rules with his sword.

One of the forgeworld commanders has Fragmentation Projectors that hit at I10, but that is only wounds on a 4+ AP-.

O'vesa can smash at S10, but has to sacrifice half of his normal attacks and is only I1 WS1

A normal commander can be loaded with the Onagar Gauntlet, but sacrifices all his attacks for one S10 AP1. Also he can only hit at I4.

It sounds like he misread the Onagar Gauntlet for being able to use the extra attack on a charge, but I still don't know where he got I10 as Tau Commanders at I4.

Actually, any Psyker MC that rolls on Biomancy can pull this off if his base Ini is at least 7. I count two in the Daemon book, and probably a few in the new Tyranid book.

Just a foot note at this point in time: Had a chance to verify the wording used in the Flechette Discharger now I am back home. As I suspected it lacks any description of being a close combat attack, so it is a stretch to try and state it gets the bonus from Smash. It would just be a Special Rule which would just trigger on the 10th initiative phase and the fact it is on a Monstrous Creature doesn't change a thing. So no, no way that I can fathom as that was the only thing that came anywhere close.

The I:10 is coming from Hammer of Wrath attacks that the Commander and drone both get for being jetpack infantry. He prob ignored/didn't read the unmodded STR part of the HOW rules

Well HoW plus onager gauntlet would make a I10 S10 AP1 attack (if that's how HoW works, I'm assuming that it means you just hit at I10).

It does not, it has additional restrictions that you should review by reading page 37.

I believe that jetpack does not get HoW, only jumppack. There is a difference between the two, but they are really close.

I dont have my book on me, but am fairly certain the two types of units in question here are "Jet" and "Jump". Jetbikes along with other types of bikes get HoW, while Jump units get HoW only of they used their jump packs for assaulting (i.e didnt move the 12" in the movement phase prior to assaulting).

There's also Jetpack units that never get HoW, but do get an Assault move.

Since the thread is about Tau, that's what we're discussing and not jetbikes.

I guess the tau player really needs to review the rulebook.

For me, I have the opposite problem.
I forget about Hammer of Wrath attacks on units that have them....
