Hey guys,
I want to get my first FW model and I want to fit it into my Ultramarine Drop Pod army which has a lot of fliers.
Basically, everything starts in reserve and gets in the enemies face turn 1/2. So it either needs to be infantry, a dreadnought or a flier.
What experiences do you guys have with a) FW models and b) FW rules? Suggestions are appreciated, so just go nuts

I've dealt with Finecast a few times, I know how to manipulate some bending and how to fill a couple of bubbles, but I'm not an expert by any means.

Start with something like one of the Contemptor dreads. They go together fairly easily, look great, and can be ordinary Ironclads if you're playing strict.
By the way, Finecast is nothing like the resin Forgeworld uses. Finecast is a plastic/resin compound. Forgeworld uses much denser, less flexible resins.

Contemporary dreads sound interesting. Is there a optimum short range load out for them? Automatically Appended Next Post: *contemptor. Autocorrect tomfoolery.

I'd go this:
Mortis contemptor dreadnought
2x Kheres assault cannon
Cyclone missile launcher
Each Kheres puts out 6 rending shots. So that's a total of 12 shots, plus your missiles. The only downside to the Kheres is its short range, but it seems that's what your after so sweet! Automatically Appended Next Post: The latest rules for the mortis contemtor are in imperial armour two second edition btw.

I think it's Around 200 plus three melta bombs. Could be slightly off though, I don't have the ia2 yet. Automatically Appended Next Post: But yeah you're right, those cannons are beasts. I'm getting some myself!

Another vote for a contemptor dread. They look really cool and due to their size I'm guessing they will be a LOT easier to deal with than any of the larger FW stuff.
So far my only experience with FW resin is a DE Tantalus. That took a razor saw to cut off the larger than 1" by 1" chunks of "flash"... Not fun. But looks awesome.

This, but if you've got the cash, slap him in a Lucius Pattern Drop Pod
The Dread is expensive points wise
Jamo wrote:I think it's Around 200 plus three melta bombs. Could be slightly off though, I don't have the ia2 yet.
It breaks down as follows using the Apocalypse 2nd ed IA book:
For the basic Dread it costs 1 Annihilator Pred (all lascannons) +3 Melta Bombs
The 2x Kheres upgrade will add +5 Melta Bombs
The CML upgrade will add +7 Melta Bombs
Total = 200 +3 Melta Bombs and it takes a Heavy Support Slot
The Lucius pod is worth a Techmarine +3 Melta Bombs, and it eats up a Fast Attack slot
Pros:
Great Dakka, as others have stated above its 12x Str 6 rending shots from the Cannons and 2x Str 8 missiles. This means you've got a shot at glancing a LR to death with good rolls
On any round he dosn't move, he gets SKYFIRE and INTERCEPTOR, so by by fliers
With the rules for the Lucius Pod, he does not have to disembark. So let him sit in there and fire away, and your opponent will have to blow the pod to shoot him. This will give your Dread 3 AR 12 ablative HPs
Front AR is the same as a Predator (no Krak grenade death) and it has a 5++ invulnerable save to shooting, 6++ in close combat
Cons
This set up is not cheap. It will run you a bunch of real wold dollars to buy the models and get them shipped to you
Its resin, so can be difficult to work with as others have noted above, just go slow and steady, and wear a mask if you're doing any sanding
Hidden cost: Keeping up to date on the FW rules. The IA books are expensive, and with a constant flow of books and updates, you're garunteed to be buying at least one a year to keep up to date with your FW models.
Also, depending on your meta and FLGS, make sure you're opponents won't refuse to play against FW. It's supposed to be legal in all 40k, but no model is fun if you can't field it.
Overall It's a great set up and works wonders on the board, but just make sure you're ready to invest in it before you lay out the cash and time to bring it to life.
I've used mine repeatedly to devastating effect, and I love it
Hope that Helps

All Contemptors now take an Elite Slot, not a Heavy Support slot. Including Mortis Patterns.
It can only be dropped in a pod by a Lucius Pattern Drop Pod, since they are 'to big' for normal Drop Pods. As such, that's another chunk of change you will have to drop on a much older mold/cast, and may have to do more clean up work. (A Lucius is also heavier than a normal Drop Pod, if that matters.)

The new Imperial Armour Vol 2 made a few changes to Contemptor Mortis dreads. They're elites, which I think is good, but now they went up 4 melta bombs base, which of course is less great.

Crap, I swear, that's the biggest problem with the FW models: The constant war to keep up with the updates
I just bought the updated Apoc book from them in October, now I've got to get IA2 (2nd ed), but already have the original IA2.
When they update older models that already have books out they should really just FAQ them online for those of us without tons of spare cash.
Ugh, looks like FW is getting another chunk of my wallet.
Any other major changes in IA2?

This. A stationary contemptor dreadnought gains interceptor and skyfire. The Kheres Assault Cannons are each 6 shots at Strength 6. And the contemptor is BS5, I think. Not too shabby.
You can toss on the 2-shot missile launcher for more shots, but those are pretty pricey.
Another recommendation would be the MKII or MKIII armors. Even if you don't play with Horus Heresy rules, they still make kick as Space Marine models.

Save yourself some points and get a Mortis Contemptor, lacks the cyclone(I think) and maybe still has a BS of 4 but ends up being cheaper pointswise for almost the same abilities and if you need it for AA then it is there. If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM! |
