The burning pits of Hades, also known as Sweden in summer
At the moment I play CSM and a little bit of Eldar. My CSM are basically 'legion-without-being-a-legion' while my Eldar are just run of the mill all-round dudes and dudettes.
However, I am tempted by trying an Imperial faction... Which one would you recommend, and why do you think it is great?
Imperial Guard has an enormous amount of variety, and you can easily tailor your list to suit your own tastes while having it be viable. Tank spam, infantry hordes, flyers, walkers, and bizarre units like roughriders are all quite capable.
The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Since it seems like you have no strong preferences beyond them being Imperial, I'd say IG. They're probably the most different, since SM and SoB are still power armor + bolters.
Order of the Righteous Armour - 542 points so far.
I've been playing marines (vanilla then BT) for 7 years or so, and I must warn you, it can get really boring at times. The basic Tactical squad is such a tedious unit, and the whole army is essentially just the same guys with different gear. Also, the fact you've already got CSM probably means this will be worse, as you have to play more SM.
Guard are good, as there's a lot of room for variety. Also their models can be as customised as much or as little as you like, and you can do mixed regiment and stuff.

I have an idea. Normally I find Guard pretty bland; even if we count away extreme cases of soullessness like DKoK they are still literally being stripped of their individuality in order to work better as tools of an officer. In comparison each of my CSM is an unique, individual character and a hero (Well... Villain) in his own right, and they can also be made much more different from one another visually to complement this whereas even Catachans pretty much all look the same.
But I thought... What if I played with that? I'd play some classic IG army (Maybe the Korps, actually, when I think of it!) and give them the oldcron treatment. Since I'll mostly be the only real IG player in our meta, I can include them when we adjust 40K to our preferences. How does it sound with Guardsmen with 2 in all stats where they currently have 3 and some other things toned down, for 2-3 ppm? It's a vision of Guard I like. DKoK also is almost monocoloured (Grey grey grey) so they should be fairly easy to paint. We can just as easily adjust cultists and similar units.
Yesssssssss... I am liking this idea more and more. Grey tide!

I recommend IG. Marines, despite different chapters and such, play very similar. You need something different, I'd recommend IG.
Farseer Faenyin 7,100 pts Yme-Loc Eldar(Apoc Included) / 5,700 pts (Non-Apoc) Record for 6th Edition- Eldar: 25-4-2
Record for 7th Edition -
Eldar: 0-0-0 (Yes, I feel it is that bad)
Battlefleet Gothic: 2,750 pts of Craftworld Eldar
X-wing(Focusing on Imperials): CR90, 6 TIE Fighters, 4 TIE Interceptors, TIE Bomber, TIE Advanced, 4 X-wings, 3 A-wings, 3 B-wings, Y-wing, Z-95
Battletech: Battlion and Command Lance of 3025 Mechs(painted as 21st Rim Worlds)
Inquisition. The most intesting characters in the Imperium are usually the ones that have the most power, and the Inquisitors are the most interesting of all.
Currently not in posession of any armies - I merely theorycraft and discuss background,
Waiting for HH Book 6 so I can start an Imperial Army army.

Welcome to the death korps !!! :p
But seriously though their fluff is ace they are on par with marines for bravery and throw the selves at the enemy which also makes for some fun games if you want to play them like the fluff depicts them.
And with a new guard codex coming soon they would probably be your best bet
You don't have to paint them grey either lol you can look towards ww2 stuff for colour schemes. Oh and be warned they can get very expensive because you have to buy loads of them !!

To me, their fluff seems to depict them as fearless soulless personalityless automatons?
Nothing wrong in that, Oldcrons pulled it off, but not very human. Not what I'd call 'bravery', more like 'brainwashed to the point where fear might as well not exist to them'.
Do something like Iron Warriors, only pre heresy. A bunch of mechanized guardsmen as your main army with allied space marines fitting your personal favorite fluff. Best of both worlds, and you get more customization than making either lone army.
