Completely theoretically of course...
Just wondering if you would find it rude if someone took a comment you had made and put it in their signature, to make it seem as if you agree with them, when you have made it abundantly clear you do not agree with either their viewpoint or the manner in which they express themselves?
If this ever happened to you, how would you make people in the forum aware that you do not agree with this person?
Again... theoretically speaking.

Ignore it. You can give anyone who questions it a link to the original post if they want it, but I don't think many people conduct arguments against signatures.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Yes, I would consider that rude.

Rather than making a public spectacle, I would suggest privately contacting the person you theoretically have a grievance with and trying to resolve the matter like adults.

Of course I would first wonder if it was an accident.
Simply by missing a single word I have often uderstood the whole purpose of comment wrong, so that's an possibility. If he had modified it in any way (other than underlining it, of course) or purposefully took it from context, I would indeed concider that rude.

It's no different from any other social situation, if I run around the city yelling that you concider racism to be okay, what would you think of me?

But I don't think there's much to do about it. You can be polite and say to him/her that "hey, your comment implies that I concider racism to be okay. That is not my view on the matter so would you kindly remove the comment or at least correct it." If he doesn't listen to you... Well, I don't know.

In this given theoretical scenario it is a person who rarely listens to others opinions.

One quick question though. If somebody changes their sig, do their previous posts sigs also change?

Also, I'm glad it's not just me who thinks it is rude ;-).

There exists a whole cadre of people whose primary goal in life appears to be taking snippets of conversation and portraying them in a way that is completely 180 degrees from how the statements were intended. They have various sundry reasons for this behavior, however the core is simply narcissism.

These nefarious creatures take on various guises such as "news reporter", "politician" and "troll". They have been around for as long as communication mediums have existed. They feed off of attention and the best defense is to simply ignore them.

Yes, it is rude. The person you're talking about is one of those obnoxious people who has mastered the art of being a while not technically violating any forum rules, and then calling in the mods as soon as you step over the line even slightly out of frustration with them. It's nothing more than a slightly more subtle form of trolling, but good luck getting anyone to do anything about it.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Yes. I would find it very rude. And it's not theoretical. Evil Inc. has done this to others that have disagreed with him in the past. He's even altered the words and still attributed it to them. To answer your questions, yes - it's extremely rude to misrepresent what someone has said.

What for? Few people will go back to check the original and you can rebuke it by pointing out on how childish he is getting angry about stuff . This would put you as someone who seems to be collected , while your opponent is the emotional one . Even if someone does check , you can just change the subject or ignore any attempts . Miss quoting or changing the original meaning of someone argument is one of the most effective ways of proving that you are right to the people watching . At worse you can just say that the miss quoted person who gets angry about it , doesn't understand sarcasm or humor . This will either make him look childish or worse , would imply that he is outside of the group , because he doesn't understand the groups humor . This also has the bonus that no one lower ranked then you is going to try to defened the miss quoted one out of fear that by doing so he too will put himself outside of the group .

It's also rude to make a post about something hypothetically when it's not.

Having looked at the persons signature I don't think it is that bad. It's not like he has you saying something terrible. Presumably the two people in his signature (including you OP) and him are frequently getting on each others nerves and this is an attempt to wind you up.

Also, after me just saying that it is against the rules to discuss specific forum members, so once again... PM a Mod.

Aside from being nothing whatsoever to do with Warhammer 40K, this topic is something that would have been better discussed either with the person directly, or with a moderator.

Moved to Off-topic, and moving on.
