And the answer is yes, that is a riptide. Nick the CEO of the company designing it I've spoken to quite a few times personally, and is a massive fan of Warhammer. He's currently finishing off a Samurai themed Tau army.

I've played the alpha, it's pretty solid and all the groundwork, if not more, is there. It's fully playable, and just needs the features that the kickstarter is adding in to make it work.

I threw $175 at them. I'm likewise wary of the persistence thing, but it looks like they've already accounted for that (they have an 'overwatch' system that basically spams defensive units while you're logged out at a reduced cost/build rate or something, plus they have the planetary shields to protect 1-2 of your planets from being taken. Granted its not necessarily the best, but its something. Doesn't seem like the kind of game you can take a 'month off' from however.

I'm playing Ogame since 2004, so as long as Novus AEterno is not as bad as a browser game mostly played by unemployed and/or students, who will utterly destroy you because they have the free time to make minutae attack plans, I can deal with being attacked while offline once in a while.

The one thing Im not much a fan of is the inability to form 'clusters' with friends, etc. I mean I see the advantages of starting in random locations, but it would be nice if you could be placed in the same relative area (IIRC the game is spaced out across several galaxies) as your buds, depending on where you and your friend end up it might make mutual defense (or blowing the gak out of them) a relative impossibility unless one or both of you is willing to move your 'empire' to a new location.
