Hey, I recently moved from Minnesota to MA and sadly have not played a single game of 40k since moving I am looking for somewhere to call my new gaming home; I live on the green line and also have a car.
Where can I go (and when) to play some casual 40k near me/has a place to park.
Thanks.

The Evil Dice crew are a good group. I used to roll with them regularly last year until I moved out to Central Mass. If you're gonna roll with the 'Arvard 'Ardboyz, get there early and plan to play late on Thursday. A lot more than just GW games pick up on their basement tables.

I'm in the same boat, moved from FL to Boston and haven't gotten a game in. Everywhere I've asked I've been told that the most active group meets at Pandemonium Games in Central Square on Thursday nights. This Thursday I'll be going for the first time so I'll report back with how it is!

The Ardboyz are active every Thursday at Pandemonium in Cambridge, just finished up a huge 8 week 40k campaign. Their website front page hasn't been updated in forever but the forums themselves are still quite active, challenge threads go up usually every Tuesday with people finding games for that coming Thursday.
The Compleat Strategist in Allston is also trying to get a club up and running on Tuesday nights, compleat40k.forumotion.com is where we've been trying to set stuff up, we'd love to get some more 40k players come out.

Is there any fee for dropping by to paint/just chill and watch games? I might swing by some day just to check out the crowd.

There's no fee for anything, the store itself has the 40k night free of charge, the only fee involved at all would be club dues to the Ard Boyz at Pandemonium and that is completely optional. Club membership isn't necessary at all to come or play, and there's no fee of any sort with the Compleat Strategist.
Also, there's a pretty big WHFB following at Pandemonium. Theres usually always 1 or 2 games going on on Thursdays, butI'd definitely post on the Arvard Ard Boyz forums beforehand to get a game because I'm fairly certain it's mostly prearranged, unlike 40k which we usually just wing it.

Bumping this. I'm going to be permanently moving to Boston and working in Cambridge, and wanted to get a sit-rep on the gaming clubs in the area. I got this list from over in this thread.
Dainty Twerp wrote:Battlegrounds in Plainville runs regular 40K events... they are probably the "busiest" of all stores around.
Battlegrounds Abington also has a strong community as I understand it.
Thursday nights in Cambridge is the Arvard Ard Boyz, they are a large gaming club. www.arvardardboyz.com
Also Thursday nights in Watertown is the DorkaMorka crew (my own affiliation) they take a very laid back approach to 40K, not tournament style at all. www.dorkamorka.com
Sundays in Malden you have EvilDice meeting at the Hobby Bunker on Exchange street. www.evildice40K.com
I think that covers a nice spread and is the extent of my 40K knowledge at this point!
Of all of them, Arvard Ard Boyz, DorkaMorka, and EvilDice are the three closest to me. I wanted to find out more about each of them from people who've been to all three, as in my experience a lot of these "gaming clubs" tend to be very closed communities that aren't too welcoming of newcomers.
How "open" of a community are these locations, in that do the 40k players only show up on their designated nights, or do you see occasional players filter in on other days to get a game in or play something else (I'm thinking of picking up 40k Conquest but I'm afraid there won't be players in the area), and do people do any painting/socializing stuff, or is it all just gaming only?
Edit: Also, how FW-friendly are each of them, and are they running ITC rulesets as standard?
Edit 2: Did anything ever happen with that Store Manager position that GW was listing for Boston and Natick?

I'm a member of Dorkamorka.
We're very friendly towards new people. Our play style is very casual, fluff being a priority in list building, and we're there mostly to relax and have fun.
We do have a bar downstairs with very cheap drinks. As such it's 21+, so that sets the tone.
Our space doesn't have AC, so we're basically shuttering it for the summer, but come September we'll be back in full force.
We have people playing, 40k, WFB, Blood Bowl, Neceomunda, Malifaux, 40k Conquest, Xwing, and a multitude of other games.
Caveat with our space, is that we rent it, and we're not associated with a store, so to play a game it costs $5, first time is free. It helps us pay rent and keep the space. We do have a full suite of high quality terrain, for all systems.
Come over and sign up on our boards.

Hello! I am a member of Malden's Evil Dice located at the wonderful Hobby Bunker! We have a very casual, friendly meta with probably about 15-20 regulars every week. Last week was probably the slowest id seen in a while with six tables going.
We also have a very supportive store with a huge stock, discounts for club members, which thanks to a thriving online business stocks pretty much anything and everything you could want hobby wise. We meet noon to six every Sunday and we are always looking for new faces!
I hope you'll come and check us out sometime, I have really never found a better environment for 40k. Automatically Appended Next Post: Enigwolf wrote:Bumping this. Edit 2: Did anything ever happen with that Store Manager position that GW was listing for Boston and Natick?
Evil dice regular here for two years.
1) we see newcomers all the time. Recently we held an escalation league for newcomers/vets to build new armies. I think 20 people participated with maybe half being new, at least five of them I would now consider regulars at the store.
2) we have people who regularly use FW at the club. I have a 30kmechanicum army I use sometimes myself. Generally if you ask your opponent if they're comfortable with it, that's fine and dandy. The only rule we do have is you 100% must have the rules on hand for anything you want to bring.
3) there is no house rule standard, players are encouraged to stick to standard missions for the most part because it is generally a pick-up game atmosphere. Many regulars use the club forum to set up games in advance (the forum is slightly restricted for non-members but you can post in the "I would like a game this week" thread as a non-member. (Membership fee is 25$ for a year, mostly gets you forum access and discount at the store. Not required for playing at all.) I know several of our more competitive minded players would happily go for ITC, you'd generally want to go on the forums to set up a game with one of them, as people with more competitive lists generally play each other, swap lists beforehand etc.
I have been to 'arvard ard boyz. I like the place my problems with it are mostly logistic/convenience wise. It's less space, and in a somewhat stuffy basement. It's also farther from me by the T, and is in the center of boston whereas Malden is more of a suburb. Evil Dice can offer free parking right across the street, the Pandemonium lot is quite small so I'm stuck lugging my army on the T. There's usually a few less players at pandy, and it is on a Thursday night, as opposed to Sunday morning which is easier for me.
The only other trouble with Pandy is that the store is a bit less welcoming than Hobby Bunker. It stocks less stuff in general for gaming, almost no paints, and is much more of a hub for CCGs. As such the card games make them way more money than the 40k so sometimes you'll be sharing space. At Evil Dice, there is a model making group that meets once a month, but they take up all of one table out of a dozen, and the rest of the time Sundays are ours.
Dorkamorka I have never been to, but I have heard from some people it is a bit more "traditional." They play very, very casual lists and discourage more competitive list building. Again, that's word of mouth, I haven't been, and they seem like nice guys.

A little far from Boston (~1 hour away), but I trekked over to my local Manchester, NH Myriad Games store today to put money down on a copy of the AoS box and was sort of greeted by a "Oh, Age of Sigmar? Is that coming out soon?" vibe which honestly got me a little disappointed as I was hoping for more of enthusiastic "AoS?! YES, dude! What are you most excited about?" ... Anyone in this region picking up or have already picked up some Age of Sigmar and looking to play? Figured it'd be a great way for me to jump right into Warhammer.
