I wasn't exactly sure where to put this so I just opted for the general section.

I have 5 very well painted Sanguinary guard but we all pretty much know that Sanguinary guard aren't very useful on the tabletop. I have seen threads about using the Angelus Boltguns as souped up, old model bolt pistols and in the BA codex, Van Vets are painted up in the display section with gold like the SG and Honor Guard models if I remember correctly.

So here's my question, if I bought power weapons for all the members of the unit for their Glaives to represent (and a power fist for the sergeant because that's how I have one of my guard modeled) would you agree that the Sanguinary guard are now Counts-as Vanguard Veterans? Even though the pistol is more of a submachine gun and the handle of each power weapon, sword or axe, is slightly longer than any normal weapon should be?

The unit costs the same number of points but COMPLETELY changes how it functions in almost every aspect of the game. Shooting, deep striking and charging, in combat stats such as number of attacks, armor saves. A lot changes making this assumption but to mean it seems reasonable to count one as the other. Is this just ridiculous or seem pretty valid?

Id be fine with that

What is the strongest weapon of mankind? The god-machines of the Adeptus Mechanicus? No! The Astartes Legions? No! The tank? The lasgun? The fist? Not at all! Courage and courage alone stands above them all!

To tell the truth, I'd rather have the sanguinary guard

Here are my two reasons for taking Vanguard Vets over Sanguinary Guard:

1) Assault out of Deep Strike

2) in games of The Scouring VV become scoring automatically.

3) The only way to make Sang Guard scoring is by paying the 225 pt Dante tax.

Don't get me wrong Dante is an awesome character I just dk that he's worth the points. and you don't gain a whole lot. Master crafted weapons, but lose out on an attack, a 2+ armor save, but can't take more than 5 guys in a squad.

As long as you point out the difference, go with it.
Since the rules are quite different, just say so.
WYSIWYG stretches with custom weapons, and makes it more of counts-as as opposed to proxy.

I’d be fine with it, just be up front about it.

WYSWYG is still a blender close combat squad, just a different flavor. So even if I forget exactly what rules it’s using, I should be able to remember that anything it touches is going to explode in a pile of gore. It’s not like “This unpainted pair of legs is really a meltagunner"

Oh, I though you meant C:SM vanguard. BA Vanguard are awful. But so are Sanguinary guard. Go with whatever awful unit floats your boat.

+1 to this. They're pretty models so would be a shame to not use them, and they're also Jump Pack troops albeit a bit more ornate.

They're in power armor and armed appropriately, you're good. Just be clear what they are.
