Having had a chat with a friend of mine that plays nids and myself Grey Knights, we are wondering how the new Mawlock deepstrike ability is affected by Coteaz's I've Been Expecting You'

Namely, does it trigger before the Mawlock arrives to do damage or after its first/second arrivals to try and appear on the table? This is presuming the Mawlock is arriving within range of Coteaz.

Since IHBEY triggers after you resolve DS scatter i would go with it going off after the first attempt.

If you can't place the Mawloc after the first scatter/blast damage it's not on the table to be shot at, is it? (Since you have to do another blast first).

I agree with Shandra, It wouldn't be on the table until after a second blast template (whether from mishapping or from killing all the models where it originally came up)

Seems to defeat the point of 'expecting someone' I have to say. The targeted unit and coteaz will be dead long before they get to use their ability that is supposedly to help defend them against such things.

Irrelevant. They werent expecting stuff to burrow up from under them, clearly.

It also didnt work on the previous version of the mawlocs rules, as the mawloc doesnt arrive until after the blast marker is placed and damage resolved.

Putting them in a Rhino or Chimera will greatly enhance their chances of survival. True, it also reduces the number of models that can actually USE the "expecting you" ability to the number of fire points....
Still, it's str 6 vs. side armor (If the Mawloc did not scatter off the vehicle) & since the transport is a single model, the Mawloc gets, at most, two hits. And, unless the Rhino is already damaged, it has 3 Hull Points ( IDK what the HP of a Chimera is, but I assume it's 3 as well). If the Mawloc failed to destroy the transport, THEN roll on the mishap table (which can lead to some really weird results, but that's what can happen with odd rules like this).
Even if the Mawloc DOES destroy the transport, use disembarkation to make sure none of the models are under the Mawloc. Then use "expecting you" from all surviving models.
If the Mawloc does scatter off the transport, then use "expecting you", limited to the number of fire points (two for rhino, 5 for chimera).

Actually if you play GK, the strike squad can on the other hand prevent the Mawloc's arrival.
So while Coteaz is less usefull in that case, GK can still handle it quite easily

Well it will automatically Mishap after it is deployed, which unfortunately happens after you eat the hits from the blast.

No, it reduces them to zero. You cannot use fire points to draw line of sight for special rules or psychic powers (only shooting attacks), so you cannot use I've Been Expecting You from inside a vehicle or building.

Not sure for the order between Mawloc and GKSS, i will have to check the GK codex to make sure.

.
Hmmm, pg 78 of the rulebook clearly states that Fire Points can be used for shooting attacks AND psychic powers, and that ranges and LOS are measured from the fire point. Also, "expecting you" IS a shooting attack, albeit out of sequence.

No, it's not. Not solely anyway.

You have to be within 12" and in LoS to trigger IBEY - this is separate from the shooting attack. Since IBEY doesn't have permission to draw LoS from a firing point (it's not a shooting attack or psychic power) it'll never trigger.

@rigeld2: That makes no sense to me. He has no LOS inside a transport except in the shooting phase? Dumb. Especially since "expecting you" says it's a shooting attack.

No, it doesn't.
It says if a unit arrives within 12" and in LoS you can make a shooting attack.

And that's correct - no model has LoS from out of a transport outside the shooting phase. You may call it dumb, but that's the rules.

What rigeld2 said. Also keep in mind that any psychic power that requires LOS cannot be traced from fire point, with the exception of witchfires. (see page 67, top right). So you cannot cast blessings or maledictions from a firepoint either.

I was'nt arguing it's against the rules, I was saying it makes little to no sense. Movement phase - Blind as a bat. Shooting phase - I Can See Everything! Assault phase - Blind as a bat again.
I can see limiting psychic powers, since it would realistically take a degree of concentration to do those things, but to think the models inside a transport would'nt be trying to see the battlefield around them while they're moving?
