My political compass today;

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.69

My political compass in November 2007;
Economic Left/Right: -5.75
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.28

So I'm a touch less leftwing and a touch less libertarian, which is kind of interesting because I don't think on a basic level my politics have changed at all. I think maybe it's just I read the questions a little differently than I did then, place the focus on different words than I might have 5 years ago. So it isn't so much that my politics have changed, but my impression of the political landscape around me is a little different, if you get my meaning.

Anyhow, that test still has a chronic left wing, anti-authoritarian bias.

In political philosophy, it basically means people who reject authority and formal government that is highly removed from society, while still valuing equality and a sharing of resources. They argue for stuff like the creation of small self-regulating communities that have shared ownership of a factory, and other stuff that will never happen.

In reality it mostly means that you smoke pot and like welfare.

But that's the thing, by the standard of world politics all US politics is right wing. Obama would be unelectable as way too far right in most of the rest of the world.

Now, personally I think the survey places all the US politicians too far out on the right, while at the same time placing respondants to the survey way too far out on the left. I suspect that's the political intent of the survey - "you see, you're much more left wing than all those politicians so vote Socialist or something".

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”
