In a story of betrayal and revenge among a group of tough guys that would make for a pretty good Quentin Tarantino film—until someone leaks the script and Quentin Tarantino refuses to make it—someone has leaked the script for Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, and now he’s refusing to make it. “I’m very, very depressed,” the director tells Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr., explaining how he’d allowed “six melon-fething people” to lay eyes on the first draft of the Western he’d planned to shoot next winter, only to hear yesterday that his agent was besieged by calls from other agents, pitching their actors for specific roles. Well, those actors won’t get any roles now: Tarantino is instead planning to publish The Hateful Eight as a book, where he can be sure no one in Hollywood will read it.

Among those six melon-fething people, of whom Tarantino begs Deadline to “please name names”: His Django Unchained producer Reggie Hudlin; an unnamed agent that Hudlin let read it, but who didn’t leave with a copy; and the actors Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth. And while one would naturally suspect Tim Roth, as he’s always the squirrely one in Quentin Tarantino stories, Tarantino insists, “The one I know didn’t do this is Tim Roth”—possibly because Tarantino has never actually watched Reservoir Dogs all the way through. Instead, he believes “it’s got to be either the agents of Dern or Madsen.” (It’s certainly easy to imagine Michael Madsen’s agent running through the streets, yelling to all within earshot that Tarantino finally sent them another script.)

But whoever’s actually responsible, Tarantino is adopting the strategy of so many a grade school teacher and punishing the entire class. While he says he's cool with the usual script leaks and subsequent preemptive reviews on the Internet, this feels like a more personal betrayal. “I give it out to six people, and if I can’t trust them to that degree, then I have no desire to make it,” Tarantino says, allowing that while he may change his mind about that eventually, right now he’s moving on to film one of his “10 more where that came from” scripts instead. Obviously he wouldn’t say anything more about that, even what genre his next movie would be, though he did say it would still likely have a “big role” for Bruce Dern (as who can stay mad at that face?). Perhaps it will just be Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, and Tim Roth locked in a warehouse, arguing over who’s the rat.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

His movies are overrated anyway IMO.

I've only ever found a couple worthy of watching more than once.

Not really they are well acted, have a distinct style and have great writing.

All downhill since Kill Bill Volume I (and this loses marks for being half a film).

Django Unchained and Inglorious Basterds are both excellent films hardly downhill at all.

Didn't like Inglorious Basterds. Didn't watch Django Unchained because of Inglorious Basterds.

Meh. I'm not much of a western person, and I've never enjoyed a single Tarantino movie. The only reason I've ever even seen any of them is I have friends that like them. So, this isn't really a huge loss for me. I feel bad for all the folks that were on tap for production that are losing out from this. This certainly doesn't reflect well on his character.

losing out on a production that wouldn't have happened until next winter?

Well, no one was 'on tap' for this as he only showed it to six people for their thoughts. He has stated before he doesn't care about public leaks, and has no issues with people reading his scripts during production, but the problem here is that someone he thought he could trust betrayed that trust and so seems to have lost enthusiasm for the project. This wasn't a public leak, this was an insider leak.

I understand how he(QT) could be PO'd by someone close breaking his trust...

but he is essentially throwing a hissy fit and taking all his toys home...

its so odd how much I like his movies, but despise him as an immature, self rightious, self insisting, big headed jerk.

I mean... he writes himself into every movie still... hes got a pretty big ego and sense of overblown self importance

I guess we know who the Quentin fanboy is, seeing as you are attempting to change people's OPINIONS to that of your own, twice already in the first few posts of this thread.

Movies are an artform, and art is highly subjective. I only found a couple of his movies good. Get it now?

and this is why I don't think this counts as a "tantrum" per se. I think he's justifiably pissed.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I am not a fan of Tarantino either.

His films are artistic, but not half as clever as he thinks they are. Tarantino is a smart man, but his plot writing is so two dimensional, pretty much everyone has the same psychological disorder.

his movies I would never say are over rated, the great ones are GREAT, the bad ones are BAD (dusk till dawn anyone?)

but if QT didnt make those great movies, he would literally be such a waste of space as a person IMO OFC

but I agree with cheesecat, he gets good actors, soundtracks and I love the dialouge in his movies. He does have a distinct way to his movies.

But he has made some really... REALLY bad ones too...

That could be interpreted as a homage to directors like Alfred Hitchcock who would always make an appearance in his movies, but yeah I agree as a person Tarantino seems to have trouble interacting with people.

I don't think he directed Dusk Till Dawn or are you including any movie that he had involvement in?

So which ones are bad? Dusk till Dawn doesn't count, because he didn't direct those.

Actors know about it but how will that spoil it for audiences, has the script been leaked online? If the movie is good and he was really looking forward to making it why doesn't he just go for it?

Blasphemer. DtoD had Selma Hayak, in an incredibly gifted and moving acting scene. It was especially difficult acting with a live snake. Barbarian!

It wasn't leaked online nor to the public. Essentially he gave it to a few people and said "don't give this to your agent" and one of those people did give it to their agent, and now agents are calling him to give parts to their clients that shouldn't know those parts exist to begin with.

I don't think this counts as a "tantrum" per se

I agree, but I love the alliteration of Tarintino throwing a tantrum.

It's not that it's been spoilt for the audiences, he's been fine with that in the past as he enjoys seeing his work "out there" and being discussed.

The issue here is that he had something he was proud of, that he only showed to six people he thought he could trust, and one of those six people betrayed that trust, and in doing so soured the idea of doing the project for him.

Well, sure. He does strike me as a tantrum-thrower in general, certainly with regards to where one parks their... never mind.

DtoD is the one that stands out as "wow how did this pile get out of the toilet?"

but fair enough if he didnt direct it... but anyone who helped make that movie should be ashamed lol...

to be honest thats the only one I can think of by name, but I swear there weas one more QT flop... maybe Im just wrong or imagining other bad ones, or forgetting their titles... either way, Im probably off base a bit.

but yeah, he makes great movies, but as a person he has too much ego...

I just remember him talking about django unchained like it was inspiring some nation wide super serial discussion on the slave trade and its implications thinking "really??? you make fun gorefest/silly but awesome movies... they inspire no serious though beyond "how intimate is a foot rub really?" which, while being important... isnt THAT imprtant"

Hollywood tends to turn people that way unfortunately. Relatively few who end up there keep their good character, assuming they had good character to begin with. I am not saying they turn 'nasty', just rather egotistical and unpleasant.
