So what do you guys think of this.

Drop a Mortis contemptor with 2 kheres assault cannons in a Lucius Drop pod and stay embarked (the manditory disembark rule does not apply to Lucius pods)

Now you have 12 BS 5 assault cannon shots, on the enemies flank or rear with an AV 13 vehicle sitting inside an AV 12 vehicle thus immune from simple tarpits and with effectively twice the hullpoints.

Of course this would cost slightly more than a Land Raider....

Question when the Drop pod is finally wrecked would the the dread get a cover save?

wouldn't you lose a turn of effective shooting? As passengers of vehicles that moved at cruising speed can only fire snapshots?

you'd have to snapshot the first turn i think but it would still be some nice secondary armor! As for cover i think he would only get it if it was exploded and not wrecked. If pod was wrecked you have to make an emergency disembark from the vehicle. You could still use its charred remains for cover, but you have to leave. If it explodes you are then in a crater and will get some cover from that.

Wait so any unit arriving via drop pod fired snap shots the first turn it comes in?

Not quite: normally, drop podded units disembark immediately and do not suffer shooting penalties of any kind. However, a deep striking vehicle counts as moving at cruising speed, and passengers embarked on a cruising vehicle may only fire snap shots. So if you disembark, you're okay. If you stay inside the Lucius Drop Pod, the only such with that alternative, you fire snap shots. You have to weigh protection over shooting accuracy.

Thank you for clearing that up for me. I'm at work and that literally made me go "wait... What"

Thanks I had forgotten about the snap shots rule. Hmm Guess you could risk getting out for the turn you arrive, then get back in in the following turns. depending on enemy placement and weight of fire and that you have 24 inch range that might not be a bad idea.

More as well. If the pod is shaken or stunned and then destroyed you also get the shooting penalty. That's a lot of points to put into something that can be easily made useless.

It's why I don't take the launcher option on drop pods. Blasts cannot be fired as snap shots, so cannot be fired the turn it lands.

Can you actually physically fit a Contemptor inside a Lucius Drop Pod?

Can you physically fit a tactical squad into a regular drop pod?
Or a rhino for that matter?

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Regular drop pods have the manditory disembark rule, Rhinos have Fire Ports.

Just envisioning someone claiming that as the Contemptor cannot physically fit in the pod (unless it's modelled sitting down ) it must disembark...

If anyone EVER tries that, drop the same on him every time he uses a transport.

Nearly nothing can fit the actual models inside when modeled in combat positions, and that even under the assumption the hull is empty and guys are piling on top of each other.

And/or never play that guy again, because that is one jerk move.

Ah, good 'Ol 3rd Edition Orks... I miss being able to cram 30 Ork Boys on a monkey pile and then have my Trukk run them all across the board.
