Having seen which units are mail order, I'd assume the Wood Elf update would be something like this: Forest Dragon/new creature, Eternal Guard/Wardancers kit, Glade Riders redone with Wild Rider components and Warhawk Rider/new unit kit. Which, unfortunately, would mean Wood Elves wouldn't get many new units.

As a person that has no interest in playing Wood Elves, I'm still excited by the prospect of new Wardancers. I'd love to see new sculpts of those guys, preferably made by whomever the genius that made the Island of Blood rat ogres was. Those things are fantastic and the Wardancers are aesthetically a fantastic unit and need a fantastic sculptor.

No new units for Wood Elves wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. They just need a complete re-boot, of both models and rules. I'm sure they'll fit a new unit in somewhere, though, even it it's part of a dual kit like Sisters of Slaughter and Witch Elves were for DE.

Dont forget a plastic hero character of some sort. DE got the fleet master. I think due to their small unit selection they might get a bunch of new stuff. Tomb Kings got 7 new units and they are probably just as popular. We'll see 3 dual kits and a character, that seems to be the recent fantasy release trend.
|
Fantasy: Tomb Kings, Dark Elves, Wood Elves, Lizardmen, Daemons
40k: Daemon Hunters (GK,MT allied), Tallarn Armored Battle Group, Night Lords.
Firestorm Armada/Firestorm Planetfall: Dindrenzi

I don't know how logical it is, but...I'm hoping for Stag Rider MC, maybe an eagle special character, Skaw the Falconer's return. Maybe some swarm unit, either moving roots or tiny stick-men*
Didn't they use to have a unit named beastmasters or something like that? Elves with sticks leading big cats or whatever into battle.
Some shapeshifter-thing could be pretty cool too.
I'm hoping for Stag Rider MC, maybe an eagle special character, Skaw the Falconer's return,
*Something like the Norwegian character Knerten

I really am hoping for a new large plastic monster kit. I know most people complained about them but the HE and DE monsters are great models that I really enjoyed painting. Perhaps a dragon/large animal made of vines or some such.
Or if they put something like this in the army list I would be thrilled. I just need an excuse to buy it.
Some plastic kits would really help the line sell. The WE is a great looking army that is fairly simple to paint well but their cost is prohibitive and the models are a pain due to the finecast status of many of them.

Wood Elves will receive some large centerpiece model, since that's the order of things in WHFB. This will probably be a dual kit with the new Treeman kit. I suspect that the OP is right about an Eternal Guard/War Dancer dual kit, a Glade/Wild Rider kit, and Warhawk Riders getting a dual kit option as well. That leaves Treekin, Waywatchers, and character sculpts to be redone.
However, given the circumstances at GW right now (weak sales, a dedicated move away from new Finecast kits), I think that it would be more likely to give Wood Elves a limited release at first, leaving some holes in the range to be filed by Finecast versions of older metal kits. Later (like, 9-12 months later), if sales are strong enough (or if the higher ups decide that it's worth it), the old metal-turned Finecast kits will get their redressing as plastic kits.

Lets face it, we'll probably see a repackage of the LoTR wood elves with square bases instead of a new Waywatcher kit...

Roll them into High Elves or Brits. Which is probably whats going to happen...
That being said a New Dragon Kit or even a Wyrm kit of some kind would be up their ally. Perhaps a new spell lore that lets you spawn forests or even change the nature of terrain.
Also the ability to deploy units in terrain pieces on the table giving them a Ambush style of play. Of course that's more fluff oriented so that would never happen.

Since when? HEs came out recently (6 months ago right?) and there was no mention of this, and while you can pull of a decent WE army with Reavers, Shadow Warriors, Sisters, Archers etc. You even have Eagles and Dragons but all of the Forest Spirits would be missing...I cant see them rolling in with Brets either, as they arent really even allies a lot of the time...
DarkWind wrote:That being said a New Dragon Kit or even a Wyrm kit of some kind would be up their ally. Perhaps a new spell lore that lets you spawn forests or even change the nature of terrain.
New Dragon kit would be awesome, Wyrm kit not so much, Forest Dragons fly goddamit!
You mean the old lore then? Where you can generate a new forest and move it around...? Im not disagreeing, but i think WEs would just do better having wider access to Life and Beasts, Lore of Athel Loren needs a total revamp, and some other book lores would be nice.

Like Ymgarl Stealers? Could work. But more Vanguard and Infiltrate would be better (Ambush doesnt really work out that well for Beastmen of course).

I for one, just started playing Wood Elves, and would have to say I really like the challenge, Coming from and Ogre/Brets back ground, when I simply rushed head on to just about anything, have to pick my battles, and work the table has really brought my interest back into the game.
I would be nice to see an overall points drop, Some sore of special rule that would help them (ASF) to me they are the coolest of the elf races, because they do not have The over the top stuff, and I do not want to see them get some stupidly over the top option.
Some simple things that could make them relevant, S4 bows as all range. Or keep it the same but no penalty for Long range, to go with no penalty for moving. Perhaps a MC option something like the Wild Stag riders that have come up before. Would be unique to the WE. They should not have anything in HA. Well maybe tree sprits could gain a scaly skin option. But I think the ward save should stay the same.

"Back in the day" waywatchers had that awesome rule where they could sit in a forest and shoot from any forest edge when inside of it. That coming back together with magic that could sprout a small gathering of trees anywhere on the battlefield would be pretty awesome.

You brought back memories of the days of my friends Brits charging Gallantly (another word for stupidly) into the forest to rid it of my waywatchers. If the unit was lead by his general, it was certain that I would roll the stake that hit a random model in the front rank. (His General in the lance formation), and it would kill him outright every time, ward save or not. Then panic a bunch of units and my Griffon riding General and chariots would clean things up. I know it was a d6 roll for traps, but if it was his general, it was a 6. (I think this theory got tested for about 6 games before he stopped charging with his general)
Fond memories.
Now a days..... No chariots....no Griffons (Was my first converted model ever, still have him sitting around)....Waywatchers are way over costed now.
