I bought a Vulkan He'stan model off ebay. It came with just the pieces, no sprue, no blister pack, etc. It sort of snapped apart in the clean up phase, so I ended up getting a new one. When it arrived, I noticed some not-so-subtle differences.

First, was the color. The first one I got was a tan-hued grey while the second one was a light grey, lighter than GW's current plastic. Second was the details on the model. The first model I bought had a lot of detail, but it was very rough. The skull on his helmet lacked detail, as did many other parts of the model. I also noticed that there was this very thin webbing on the first model that was not there at all on the second. And finally, the two models feel completely different. The First model was very brittle and broke easily. The second model I got, on the other hand, was very soft. Finally, the bases were different. The first model had a base made of the same material as the model and was grey. The second model, which came in the blister, had a black slotted base.

Am I worrying about nothing? Is this just a difference in production/model version? Or was the first Vulkan a possible knock-off? Insight would be appreciated.

First model, note the color and the webbing

The first one does appear to possibly have been a knock-off.

I have never seen a GW finecast model with a finecast base .. they all come with the black plastic base.

I'm going to have to say that first model was a knock-off, 99% sure.

I'm a hundred percent positive you bought a knock-off. I'd stake my life on it.

Time to file a claim on eBay! The guy shipped from the US. It was my first finecast so I wouldn't have noticed the base. But now that I have an actual GW one, I'm almost positive its a knock off.

thanks everyone. Now I'm pissed.

Well the one on the sprue is GW, you can tell by the bubbles in the foot. Funny how the recast is actually better in some ways.

Keep the knock off if it's of better quality than the Finecast one. Seriously.

Don't just file a claim on eBay.

Contact Games Workshop as well with the seller's information.

It's not better quality than the GW one. The details are rough, the model is brittle (snapped in places that shouldn't seem possible) and it was almost impossible for the glue to stick together. If it was better than the GW then I wouldn't be upset.

The buyer had no idea, said he got it in a trade, and is offering a refund. I'll leave it at that.

Keep a very close eye on that seller and still contact GW.

I had something similar happen to me years ago when I nabbed a Forge World Thunderbolt Pilot from a US seller who when I contacted him because of the fact that it was a recast(the baggy being missing, the flash having been removed, the model being attached to its base with no superglue or pinning, etc tipped me off) kept claiming that he "got it in a trade". He offered a refund, I took it and didn't think twice.

The next week he was selling four more Thunderbolt Pilots claiming that "he had an excess of them and he wanted to get rid of them quick".

With the abundance of recasters, it is kind of hard to always know if what you have is authentic or not.

I've actually seen recasts that were better quality than the FW version. I got a set of Tartartors Terminators that were more flash than model, straight out of the FW bag.

Though the resin base is a pretty big give away. Too bad GW's quality control is so terrible recasters can produce equal or even better casts...

why? GW is letting the finecast line of products die, and most of the time it was a painful struggle of beating the snot out of GW until it supplied with a product that matched the advertising on the box and didn't look like it was swiss cheese left over from 1960 that somehow managed to shrivel into a shape resembling a GW model.
