What is the best way to kit them out

Can they take an underslung shuriken cannon? I can't remember, if they can, take the cannon and a scatter laser, if not, your best bet is probably something like a star cannon.

They can take under slung shuriken cannons and scatter lasers. It is not a bad way to go, probably the best in fact. Though TBH you will end up asking yourself why you didn't take warwalkers unless you have a very specific plan for the vypers.

One thing I have found to be useful for vypers is their greater movement coming on from outflank allows a better chance to get rear armour shots or side armour and range to things the warwalkers may not be able to get to.

I have also seen them used with missile launchers as they are reasonably resilient from 48" away from the enemy. I would not recommend it though as they seem very over priced to me.

I don't think Vypers can outflank?

Well, what to arm them with depends. SL/SC is rather useful; as is Starcannon/SC. I normally find myself running Dual Shuriken Cannons though; perhaps not the most effective; but very fun to play.

I go with Scatter Laser and Shuriken cannon on mine. The scatter laser is an almost auto take due to the laser lock, and this in turn makes it pretty much necessary to take the Shuriken Cannon with it, otherwise it is wasted.

Yes, War Walkers are probably better, but the Vypers are more in keeping with my Saim Hann list.

Is no fun, is no Blinsky!

I prefer them with either brightlances or starcannons with a underslung shuriken cannon. The scatter laser has no AP value. Sure it gives laser lock but ehhh. I haven't seen the value with it. Most times I take them I bring 2 vypers with starcannons/SC for MEQ/TEQ killing. That and they make good fodder/bait. Meanwhile my Hornets outflank and rip them a new one.
That's another topic though. 2 Hornets w/ 2 Pulse Lasers 160.
2 Vypers w BL/SC 140.... Ain't even a question.

Vypers with SL/SC are pretty good at zipping around to put lots of S6 firepower into side/rear armour. War Walkers need to reserve and outflank to get the same effect and even then it's likely to only pay off on one turn.

The main reasons to take Vypers over Walkers are for the manoeuvrability, and to keep HS slots free.

BS 4 with assault skimmer rule (move flat out and still fire snap shots) and scout. They are so money. I have 4 of them best 210 bucks I ever spent. AV 11 front and side too.

I like double shuricannons. A squad of 3 putting out 24 s6 bladestorm shots per turn is pretty nasty. They're super fast so you're likely to get shots off on your first turn and I've found they often get ignored for more dangerous looking targets.

This.

If your group allows FW, there is no reason to ever take Vypers. Also, the pulse lasers only cost 5 pts each. I run mine with holofields and pulse lasers for 95 points each. The skimmer assualt rule makes them perfect for flier hunting. Guide them, flat out 24 inches, (they come stock with star engines) face rear armour, and blast away with those re-rollable snap shots.

Not hard, just expensive.

Any group that doesn't allow FW is a bunch of D holes. Yes D holes. FW rocks. I have found vypers are better when something more dangerous is around. It draws away fire. When faced with pulse lasers or warp spiders. It becomes easier to not shoot at vypers.

Has Hornet's 'Aerial Assault' rule been updated somewhere?

EDIT: Wait that's an old rule. There are newer rules for Hornets... somewhere. This is the annoying thing with FW, it is really difficult to track what rules are up to date. Would it kill them to say something like 'Current rules for this unit can be found in [the book's name]" on their webpage in the description of each unit?

Well there's your problem. Read, and get your friends to buy the proper rules for their FW units, and you'll realise that many FW units are actually quite underpowered in many terms, such as the Malcador, Chaos Decimator and Tiger Shark.
