I don't think it would replace the table top version but has there ever been talk about a table top video game version.

my idea is you choose an army, choose a point value and pick all your models. either find someone online to play with or the computer could be your opponent.

all rules and models are available to play in the software.

terrain could be randomly generated. table size could be adjusted.

it would make for a great way to test your real armies and their viability.

Something like this would probably be liked by a lot of the community, as well as bringing the game to a wider audience, but I doubt it would ever happen, as from GWs POV, they wouldn't want to charge you £30 for a game when they could charge you £100+ for rules, £20 per squad and if they're lucky 200+ for terrain and paints.

I think PP did something like this with their Kickstarter (no idea how close it is to the game as I've played neither), and the profits would outweigh the potential loss in sales, but this is GW we're talking about, as opposed to a sensible company.

I wouldn't have the codex and rules complete in the game but at least programed into it so the mechanics work. maybe work the game in a way where you still require your codex to look up stuff.

LOL so like, place the rule in the game but have nothing in the game what so ever telling you how to play or what rules do. That way if you haven't read the BRB or a codex you will have a very hard time figuring out how to play.

I think they'd be better off just making it all inclusive because the people who have miniatures will still play with and buy miniatures, and if the newcomers dont try em its not a big deal.

I doubt it will happen as GW tends to be somewhat Laze-fair about putting their IP into video games. It would be a fantastic idea though as video games are not in direct competition with the table top game as evidence by the DoW series which rather than reducing sales has give some help through the years by introducing the IP to a larger market.

GW could actually make more on video games than their modeling business if they did it right with DLC units released with new data slates and DLC updates released with their codex. Then a new version of the game with new mission every 5 years when the BRB drops.

Of course this is the company which turned down WOW and Starcraft (supposedly).

Have you seen Vassal 40k? It basically works on this principle, giving you onscreen models and automated dice rolls, but still requiring rules from the players. That way, they get around GW legal by not actually making any information available online. The system does have a few issues (hard to check LOS, sometime the model sprites are confusing) but it's not bad.

Of course, this is only any good to tabletop players, whereas GW could really break into the console gaming market if they did a complete, rules-included version.

They could do micro transactions for models like magic does for ecards. They have no reason to change its a successful product.

A bit off topic, but a mod should exist for XCom that makes it 40k. That would be great.

I'll be honest, they should stick with a DOW style system. The rules of 40k are so galumphing and convoluted they'ed be practically unplayable in a digital format.

I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

I'd have to disagree with you on that. I think it would translate fairly well. The biggest hurdle I think would be LOS and cover.

Make it a free or $10 program with additional costs for models, armies, color schemes, and terrain pieces to use in your games. I would think that GW could make a large amount of money off of this. Although, I think WHFB would be a little easier as the models are kept together more so than WH40K which would make movement easier.
