New to the game trying to work out, Can a necron doom scythes death ray kill a heldrake?

Also will it matter if a heldrake is hovering / zooming/ swooping etc.

Can't hit it when it's Zooming, since it doesn't roll to hit and thus can't fire snap shots.

So does a doom scythe have skyfire?

Yes, of course it does. It's a flyer. The Death Ray, however, cannot hit flyers as it does not roll to hit.

However, if the Heldrake is hovering, it then just becomes a skimmer. As such, it loses it's HtH rule and becomes susceptible to Death Rays.

Also, this should be in YMDC.

With much difficulty

High Strength rate of fire tends to help. Necrons have tons of that in the form of Tesla destructors. Fortification choices tend to help as well.
If you are willing to delve into forge world, the Sentry Pylons (not the big super heavy, the little ones) are quite handy against flyers.

Im really puzzled. I planned to use doom scythes as my "anti" heldrakes. But i cant see a reason why it will be hovering..

Im obviously missing something

It also comes with a Tesla Destructor.

Use the destructor for the Heldrake, and the Death Ray to mop up tanks.

Take a pair of Anni barges for some ground based anti-air, just in case his drake comes in earlier than the scythe.

You could use two Doom Scythes. That would work as well. Probably even better since they have Skyfire. It's not so much the vehicle that you are after than the gun. The Destructor is very good against flyers, and even better when it has skyfire.

The only real problem is that they depend on reserve rolls, but as long as you don't die, it should be fine.

Not really for Necrons. The best way to take out zooming fliers is high rate of Strength 7 weaponry as most fliers are AV11-12. Given that Necrons have these in abundance you're better off buying more Night Scythes and Anni Barges as they are twin-linked AND can generate more shots.

If you can hit it, yes. Problem is though is that in order to get that relay, you need to roll a 6. Not a very reliable tactic to take down a drake. Against every else, sure. Sniping transports with Heavy Gauss never goes wrong.

A bit more reliable, yes. You'd have to have a them all in a 5 man court unit though, to maximize their efficiency.

Don't use the doom scythe's TL testla destructor on the drake because you waste the ability to use the death ray. You should have plenty of TL testla destructors from annihilation barges and night scythes.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

I thought scythes can use all weapons ? How does the ability to use the death ray become lost?

Planet 40k

As the death ray has to be able to hit whatever the tesla has fired at. If you fire death ray it cannot hit the heldrake, meaning the heldrake cannot be selected as a target for the destructors. Clearly stated in the death ray rules

Thought of another option overnight.

4 storm teks and 1 veil tek?

Would this be affective vs a heldrake

Maybe with a lord or 2 as backup?

Annihilation barges are most effective: on average you get 4 hits at s7.

4 voltaics at 16 shots. Less hits but more glances? Only 1s miss

Planet 40k

You have to hit, so those 16 shots are better at taking out ground stuff and even then you only need three.

Tesla dest you gotta hit too.

16 shots is 2-3 hull points on average? Potentially kills a drake in a turn

Tesla gets 4 hits but doesnt it need 5s to then glance? Which is 1-2 hull points onaverage

Oh, I wasn't saying you can split targets, lol.

I meant something like one turn - shoot destructors at drake, next turn shoot ray at LR, etc. Just to cover all possible targets, you know.

It would be unwise strategically. You are dedicating an royal court to kill one unit, one they don't even have that much of a chance to kill, and one they have to get very close to, thanks to the Voltaic Staff's range of 12"

I think you might be better of taking this tangent off to the tactics or army list boards really.

Then it costs over 100 points, that could be mishapped into oblivion. Still not as cost effective as an annihilation barge.
