I made a post over in Tactics asking how people deal with Thunderfire Cannons and some disagreements have arisen about whether TFCs can choose a level and fire or if they are like other Barrage weapons and can only fire at the top level so I come here to clear up this a bit.

Does it have the barrage special rule? If so it follows all the rules for barrage weapons. Including how it interacts with ruins.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

care to clarify which update you are refering to? I'll double check my codex later but if it not in the coex, it is not in the FAQ, so if it doesn't have the barrage rule attached to it then it doesn't have it, if it does, as said it will act like what it is, a barrage weapon.

The new C:SM lists TFC ranged attacks as barrage.
There is no confusion.

Ya it can only hit the top layer, however the best defense for the thunder fire cannon is a 2 inch spread on your models. If you do this there is no way for then to hit more than 1 on direct hits. It reduces the effectiveness of the tfc.

Not quite. They'll only get 1 hit on the first direct hit, any later hits can get at least 2, and usually 3, models. But yeah spreading out def helps.

Something that has arisen in my local gaming group is that people often forget that they hit the highest level under the centre hole, so long as the hole is wholly over a lower level they can hit units "downstairs" from the very top.
This seems to mean that the other 3 blasts would hit the highest level under their centre hole, even if they are at different levels.
