So after somewhere in the region of a 20 year absence from 40K I have decided to get back into the painting, with a view to building up an army.

Anyway, I have chosen to go for the Imperial Guard, with a handful of Chaos Marines/Terminators as an alternative army/practice paint job.

I am currently basing 10 Cadian Shock Troops in the standard Cadian colours. But I have also picked up a couple of Sentinels as well. This is the 90% completed Sentinel.

What I Did

Anyway these are the steps I took to get this far (any advice on what to do differently is appreciated).

  • Airbrushed with Vallejo Nato Green Surface Primer

  • Airbrushed with Vallejo Field Green but wasn't happy with the shade of Green it was giving me so instead went,

  • Airbrushed with a thinned out Castellan Green

  • Washed with a Athonian Camoshade (next time I may use Nuln Oil instead)

  • Medium Drybrushed with Loren Forrest

  • Light Drybrush with Straken Green

  • Painted all the metal in Leadbelcher

  • Washed the metal with Nuln Oil

  • Drybrush with Ironbreaker/Runefang

  • The crests were painted in Celestra Grey

  • Drybrushed the crests in Skull White/Praxi White

  • Picked out the details in Leadbelcher

  • Still To Do

As I mentioned I was about 90% done so on my to do list is:-

  • Paint the base in astrogranite, base coat it in Abadon black and dry brush in various shades of grey and brown.

  • Dry brush the feet in a very light shade of brown to make it look as if it has been used a few times.

  • Wash all the metal again in Nuln oil, it is looking a little to clean for my liking.

  • Black out all the viewports and paint the wipers in leadbelcher

  • Paint the cable glands/pipe glands (the bits where the pipes and cables begin and end) in a copper/brass type colour

  • paint the parts around the metal part of the legs in abadon black with some grey layers to make it look a little like the rubber cushions you get on hydraulic parts

  • Generally touch up around the crests and any other paint over spills

  • Seal it all

  • What I don't like

In my eagerness to start my first major paint job I wasn't as careful as I would have liked . This can be mainly seen on the front. Under the front right hand window is some glue overspill. On either side of the front there are gaps that should have been filled in with either milliput or liquid green stuff.

I will be assembling and painting another sentinel at the weekend and this will be followed by a Valkyrie and Leman Russ. So does anyone have any tips they can offer, things I should consider doing differently?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Its a good clean paint job, the highlight and drybrush are well done.

I would recommend a wash on the exhaust pipes but that's just my preference.

Looks like it's already washed, it could just be the camera flash or cruddy lighting

    Thanks for the comments.

The cladding on the exhausts was washed and then drybrushed, but the internal part of the exhaust have not yet been washed. I want to give the exhausts a more warm look as if the metal has been constantly warmed up over many a campaign.
