Sorry if this sounds redundant, but I am wondering what the consensus is on Tyranids at this point. Are there any favorite army lists, are people seeing good results with the army? I find a lot of questions about specific units, but few discussions about the new Codex as a whole.

There is a mono-build that can compete at the semi-competitive level.

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

I personally think that what is good in the codex is being overlooked, but that's based on very limited experience... I just feel like there's a better way to do it than trying to re-make "the good builds" from the last codex.

Especially with Tau being one of the dominant armies. Tyranids have something almost custom designed to make Tau wet themselves and nobody's talking about it.

Yes. The Tyranids are good when compared to all but the Tau and Eldar Codecies.

The same thing can be said about all but the Tau and Eldar Codecies.

@Dementedwombat: I'm planning to use Broodlord hit squads with 'The Horror' against Tau the next time I play them, so I'll see for myself how that fares. If you weren't talking about The Horror, then I guess I'm overlooking it too...

And what IS that mono-build? The only agreement I have seen so far is that Flyrants are good. Every other batRep and Army List has argued about Troops, Elites, Fast Attack, and Heavy Support...

You got this! Just imagine 5 squads of MSU genestealers with brood lords and a big squad of outflanking warriors as your troops choices. Your other stuff can be whatever you want except I recommend the deathleaper for a very specific reason I will mention below.

Things Tau hate:

1. Close combat: big deal, you'll never get there

2 (the one everyone forgets): Taking leadership tests! We are a LD 7 army! I don't even buy sergeants.

P.S. Stock the deathleaper to use on an ethereal. You have to use the ethereal's leadership (there's no option). Nothing like rolling a 5 or 6 and actually REDUCING the leadership of all my elite units (LD 10 -> 7 which makes all tau units in 12" ld 7).

I guess the Daemon and Necron books are just junk, not to mention the SM- book that is pretty good ( though admittedly I haven't seen the stats on the new SM book in tournaments yet)

Not trying to be an a** or anything I just find it funny that everyone is so focused on those two books that they overlook that the Daemon and Necron books are still winning more than people want to admit.
Someone on here did the stats for tournaments a couple months ago and while yes eldar and tau were in the lead Daemons were not too far behind and Necrons weren't doing awful, I'm sure Grav. Bikes are doing just fine now as well.

I would have a hard time believing the Tyranids are going to fall into that mix, likely much closer to chaos space marines and dark angels.

To the other point In here I agree that a smart tyranid player can wreak havoc on a tau player with this codex because of all the pinning checks and spore mines being ap4 and destroying large chunks of tau lines.

My plan of attack, using the models I already have except for the Hormagaunts (which I will most likely purchase soon)

Flyrant w/ devourers and lashwhip + bonesword
Tyranid Prime (with the dakkafexen)

3 Broodlord hit squads (5 genestealers + Broodlord)
2 groups of 20 hormagaunts

3 raveners w/ rending claws
10 gargoyles

2 Dakkafex (1 with Regen)
1 Mawloc
1 Trygon Prime w/ miasma cannon + maw claws

The Tyranid Prime goes with the Dakkafex, who will be an equal distance from him to allow for Look out Sir!-ing the wounds to either Carnifex (the one with Regen getting the most early wounds). The Trygon Prime will be held in reserve and hopefully arrive turn 2, deep striking with the intention of killing marker lights with his electro-static spines and Miasma Cannon should he get into such a position. The 3 broodlord groups will infiltrate and hit the scariest shooty units with The Horror to allow my 40 hormagaunts, 3 raveners, and 10 gargoyles a chance to cross the field.

(I realize the raveners aren't the most optimal choice, but I purchased them forever ago and shelved them almost immediately. Considering that they're beasts, they can put forward some heavy pressure, but I fully expect them to fold before reaching combat. They (along with the gargoyles) will be the first models that get replaced in the list....possibly by a 3rd dakkafex).

The rest of the list would be played as you'd expect. I don't fully expect it to trounce the tau army I'll be playing, but I do expect to get into combat and eat some fish. The success of "the Horror" will be a key factor.

As for the Deathleaper...I didn't realize that Tau Elites HAD to use his leadership. I had him in my list until I decided to run the Tyranid Prime with my Dakkafexen. Maybe I'll try that sometime...

I'm not 100% on this, but the question came up once and I believe the answer is yes they are forced. I think Imperial Guard uses the same wording but I could be wrong.
