Subject: I want to show you something beautiful: Naval Action
So this is an upcoming game from those wacky Russians who do stuff like World of Tanks. If you're anything like me, the golden age of sail is one of the few things that gets your cold, black heart pumping. I don't even care if it's good (just as I didn't care that Pirates of the Burning Sea was a terrible MMO), I'll play the hell out of it for the ship models alone.

Otherwise WWII is where it's at for naval war for me.
I don't...I don't believe they played a significant role in that one.

realistic ship combat scares me as burning sea used "realism" if you didnt have the wind at the right time combat came to a slow slow burn real quick. As long as the wind mechanic isnt too nuts id be happy

This is the warship game being made by Wargaming.net (the World of Tanks devs). It actually looks quite interesting.

I really liked the ship combat in Empire: Total War in concept but the wind mechanic kind of made it a bore. SO yeah. Good wind mechanics make of break something like this for me.
Jenkins: You don't have jurisdiction here!
Smith Jamison: We aren't here, which means when we open up on you and shred your bodies with automatic fire then this will never have happened.

Burning Sea is actually my all-time favorite MMO for that, among many other, reasons.
That's the reality of sailing boats, man. If the wind isn't in your favor, you're screwed.

fully agree that the wind should how power, but I think they went a little too far in the game, dont think it caught the right balance between realistic and fun to play
If this turns into another f2p, 'micro-trans for the win' games I'll punch my computer screen. Not because I'm sick of that model, I am, but this looks sooooo good.
Not to mention there's been feth all in the Naval sim department for YEARS.

I don't think this is an MMO (it says "multiplayer and co-op", which would be a redundant thing to put on the feature list of an MMO), so I'd be unbelievably astonished if it had a F2P Microtransaction model.
Looks very interesting.
EDIT: Oh, just checked their forums and there's a post mentioning player guilds and guild-owned ports and towns, so I take it back, it could be an MMO.
Still looks very interesting.

Its still in alpha but its supposed to at least be in open beta this year.
There is nothing inherently bad about F2P games, provided that they are well designed and aren't simply pay to win.

Meh, show me something like Seekrieg realized in video game form and I'll get excited. Sucks that the sim market is dead and buried it seems.

Either way, I'm interested to see how this goes. They've mentioned specific ship names like the HMS Surprise (captured French ship) as being a part of the game; making specific ships available to the player base and building it around an mmo model? Seems a bit weird when they're aiming for historical accuracy and yet it looks like there will be seven thousand Surprise's.

I think it's a case of high development costs + narrow target audience = too high of a risk these days.

The last naval simulator I played was...god, Great Naval Battles of the North Atlantic back on my 386.
I suppose you're right Maelstrom, the market for simulators in general isn't very large (even when you include the driving and flight side of things). Which is a shame because they're such great fun and generally force the player to pay attention to what's going on.
I'd love to see something like Silent Hunter/it's destroyer counterpart make an appearance again. Used to watch my dad fight against a family friend (one was a sub and the other an escort) and it was glorious.

It's a dang shame in my opinion because most of my favorite games are sims of one type or another. Kerbal Space Program (which admittedly is only a simulation in the loosest sense), MechWarrior (I miss mech sim games so much...), Silent Hunter 3 is truly an amazing looking game that I have never gotten a chance to play; being able to plot out your torpedo course using nothing but a compass and straight edge appeals to me very much.
And if they would make a half decent off-road racing sim I'd probably never play anything else ever again. Gran Turismo for 4x4s is pretty much my dream game I know will never get made...

Its not a racing game but Spintires may be of interest to you. Its still in development but there is a tech demo available. Its basically an offroad truck driving sim.

That is really cool! Now they just need to add in some desert dunes and rocks... throw in standard vehicle upgrade system...I see huge potential in this game.
