I just started as we'll, so I can't answer your question with the perfect answer. However if you go to easyarmy.com you can look through their companies, and build from there.

You probably want to look at a tank company with infantry as support platoons. Or vice versa (infantry with tank support). Usually the support for infantry or mech is light to medium tanks only.

Well, easy army can at least point you to which book might be the most useful.

Did find this on the FoW website:
http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/Briefings/17-SS-Panzergrenadierdivision.pdf

Might be a good start, didn't have any options for the tigers though.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

An encyclopic and simple answer for you and every beginner.
You need:

1. Flames of War Open Fire - It's damn good value and contains full ruleset and two starter armies.

2. EasyArmy.com - You are forgiven if you are reluctant and think this is a dodgy site with .rips of Flames of War property, however its 100% legit and endorsed by the games lawful owners.

3. 15mm toys - Apart from that all you need are dice miniatures and suitable terrain, terrain is NOT an afterthought. Think as much about collecting enough suitable 15mm terrain as you do about your armies.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

What you will need is one of the late war Intelligence briefing books for army lists and stats for your Germans Just beware that some of the books are allies only. so it's best to check

@ zika86.
Just use the German lists from the V3 Rules Forces Book that are free on easy Army .Com.
These are a good indicator on how all the other German lists are set out.(And include all the stats for the units you have, I think.)

Battle front have free PDF lists for more specific German forces.(Under Hobby then Briefings, Mid war & Late war ).

For just German forces Grey Wolf covers a wide range of German lists for the Eastern Front. And Atlantic Wall for D-day and Western Europe.

(Bridge By Bridge covers more specialized lists for forces defending against Operation Market Garden.)

Let me see if I have your inventory correct:
2 platoons of grenadiers, command teams, and a panzershreck team
2 Pak40
3 StugIII
2 Tigers
10 PzIVs
4 MG42?
4 8cm mortars?
halftrack platoon? Is this with infantry teams also? A full Gepanzerte Panzergrenadier platoon?

You can use the following PDF briefings
Walkure Grenadier Infantry Co supported by either the Tigers or 5 Panzers, and the StuGs. Typically Eastern Front

Fuhrer Brigades with either a PanzerIV company or a Grenadier Company supported by PzIVs and Stugs, but no Tigers; Bulge era

Panzers to the Meuse for the PzIVs, Stugs and Infantry, but no Tigers Bulge era.

There isn't a German 'codex' that will give you a list for all German units. FoW's briefings are divided by front and era.

Go to Easy Army. Sign up. Look for the 'Flames of War v3 Forces' source under the New Companies tab. You will find a Grenadier company and two Panzerkompanies for free.

There are at least three books just for Germans - Atlantik wall (forces in Normandy) bridge by bridge (forces around market garden) and grey wolf (forces eastern front 1944-early 45).

There will be fortress Italy, (for Italy) next month. Also German and us lists are in Blood guts and glory, devils charge and Nuts ( these cover the Ardennes) and desperate measures is a German/Russian book for 1945.

So if you and your brother want to play market garden, go for 'bridge by bridge' but don't complain if all the units you have are not available, history does that to you!

Well zilka, since you already have the Normandy and Eastern Front books you must be half way set. Unless you sold your whole FoW collection like you did your 40k one in a fit of pique?

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

I really don't get why it so hard to let new players no what codex they need
i don't have any books because i can't figure out what book goes to what army
I wanted to do a early polish cavalry army but there's no polish books

Everybody here has given you the information you need. This isn't 40k and there isn't a single codex for each nation. That's not how this game works. You also don't need every book. Go to the store and go through their books to find a list you like, buy that book. Some of the books have lists for more than one nation, those have been pointed out above. You and your brother would then only need a single book.

A lot of the special rules are in the rule book as well, so you don't necessarily need the book with easyarmy. This is especially true for the free armies with the v3 rule book.

Finally if you want polish cavalry look at this book, blitzkrieg: http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=109&art_id=2229

We've told you everything you need to know. It's time to do a little of your own work in actually reading what we've said.

You don't have to apologize for asking the question, but it's quite clear you aren't reading the things we are posting to help you.

AndrasOtto already posted this intel briefing (Intel Briefings are the FoW equivalent of a 40k codex): http://www.flamesofwar.com/Portals/0/Documents/Briefings/Walkurekompanie.pdf

I went through it, it lists special rules, and the special rules for all the units are ALL in the rule book, thus you do not need to purchase an additional book to play. If you can't find them in the rule book, check the index for page number.
