Subject: Chaos Orks, Making my own Race!

So a little while back I posted a bit about this in the introductions section (as I'm new) and I wanted to get it out onto
the main forum.
I'm a Uni student doing Game Art & Design and for my final major project I am designing my own race inspired by
Warhammer 40k. Its a new race of Chaos Orks, I'm designing 3 characters, modelling them, getting them 3D printed
and then I'm going to paint them!
So far I've made a quick test sculpt just to see the 3D print quality and I'm now onto designing the main models.
Heres some pics of the test print.
Peeps can check out and follow the project here ------> http://makingwarhammer.blogspot.co.uk/
I appreciate and input/ideas from the miniature community. Whadda you guys think?

Thats looking fantastic, full of character aswell. Are the characters all gong to be nurgle themed? (I think thats a nurgle symbol on his chest right?) Or are you looking into the various gods as themes?

It is Nurgle yes ^_^ good eye :-P
Yeh at the moment the plan is all to be nurgle, I've done a bit of looking into the other gods and nurgle seems to be the most appropriate for the look/theme I'm aiming for.
I'm planning on making a HQ unit, an elite unit and either infantry or vehicle, so I want them to all be uniformed and from the same army.

One idea for your elites choice might be to craft up a pain boy, the idea of nurgle themed "doc" ork helping bring the plague to the other Orks (or keeping them from devolving into a puddle of fungus goop) would be a nice touch. It'd also have links between contagion and "doctors"

ooo nice idea! I've been doing some concepts over the last few days and I seem to drifting towards a scout. I like the idea of the weaponry and eyesight augmentations being fused with some chaos.
I've only got time for 3 units for the uni project but I'm hoping once I finish to carry on with this and hopefully end up with a solid army full of choas orks.

Your execution of the subject matter is beautiful. It's not original (there's an old RT ork with a Mark of Khorne on his helmet), but it's not widely done, either. The old Daemon Hunters Codex had an option for Chaos "infecting" a normal army, hence the reason for the GKs to go after them.

Thanks. I know GW had some Chaos Orks back in the 80s (info from 1 or 2 other members on here) but they were discontinued. Despite looking I hadn't come across much chaos-ork references or models.
Thanks for that bit of info, in all honesty I don't know much about the lore of Space Marine chapters or the various codexes. Its a shame my idea isn't completely original but hopefully the way in which I design them will make them different from anything that has already been made.

I mainly use 3Ds Max and zBrush to sculpt/model. And 3Ds Max to fix the model in ways zBrush can't :-)

Do you get a direct output for your 3D-printer or is a different converter necessary to get files the printer can handle?

Very nice!
Though point of interest, if i recall orks USED to be aligned to the chaos gods. Funny thing is they still kind of are in the Chaos Marauders card game.

Most 3D printers need STL files in order to print.
Both zBrush and 3Ds Max have the ability to export in this format but there are generally issues that will need fixing by other programs.
The one I use is netfabb, it checks the models for errors that would cause problems during printing such as flipped faces, manifold edges and the model not being water tight.
If you check out my blog theres quite a bit of info on 3D printing, the the requirements of 3D printings and the issues involved. http://makingwarhammer.blogspot.co.uk/ Automatically Appended Next Post: Thanks very much doc1234!
Yeah a few people have told me about the existence of Chaos Orks now (manly from the 80s) I honestly didnt know about it when I decided to do them for my project.
Kinda a bummer really I wanted to do something original that hadn't been done before.
But I'm too far into it now to change and I love Chaos and Orks so its still gonna be awesome personally ^_^

Let's be honest here, "originality" is a rare oasis in the hobby desert, but Chaos Orks rank up there close 2nd or 3rd of things that got retconned that tickle me when i see done again, close second behind squats can't wait to see some eventual sculpts and things painted up

I think the idea is absolutely awesome.
Chaos orks make just as much sense as Chaos Marines, or at least for Nurgle and Khorne.

Thanks SuiCom, will check it out. I was planning on designing some custom ork tanks and since this would be rather technical models opted for Inventor, though hadn't the time to work much with it yet.

Yeah I guess, to be fair complete originality is pretty rare come by in most things these days.
Despite it being somewhat done before I'm really glad everyone seems to be taking an interest in it and thinks its a good idea etc.
I want the project/ models to look good but I also want people who play Warhammer (and other miniature games) to like it Automatically Appended Next Post: Kosake wrote:Thanks SuiCom, will check it out. You're welcome ^_^
I haven't heard of 'inventor', 3DS max would be alright at complicated models and is good at making 'man made' stuff like buildings etc (would do tanks alright)
Zbrush tends to be better at organic sculpting, like people etc. For example I used zbrush to make the heads of my test model, but the main body is mostly done in 3DS max.
As long as you can get it into an STL file format nettfabb will sort the rest and is relatively easy to use. There are file converters for programs that cant save in STL too.
Lemme know if you need any help ^_^

Great looking piece, so far.
In the current environment of allowing allies in 40K, I could definitely see people wanting to pick up something like this, so that their Ork Allies and Chaos Allies "mesh" better together.
Here's to hoping the next Ork codex doesn't blow chunks like CSM codex does. You might see ork armies with Chaos allies in abundance!

An idea for how they came about:
Everyone is aware of the Ork that was infected with the Nurgle-y virus and his spores infected everyone else.
Well, how about some of the spores developed, and what you see today are these Orks :3 Discount it if you like but meh.
That's an amazing sculpt though! Can't wait to see what it's like when it's all done and dusted.
