Been playing Cryx on and off for a few years, really into Warmachine right now and enjoying adding to them and they will continue to be my no.1 faction!

However, I am now looking for a possible 2nd faction.

For my 2nd faction I'd like as different to Cryx as possible! By that I mean their playstyle. I can't decide on looks alone as most of the factions have models that I like!

Any thoughts?

Are you considering moving into hordes or just warmachine?

If Cryx is a glass hammer, Khador are a steel anvil. They do everything different. We don't do much magic making, we don't have any arc nodes, and attacks that can cripple a helljack will barely scratch a Khador heavy.

Or you could play hordes, in which case Troll bloods are probably the most opposite with their tough infantry and heavy beasts.

Not against venturing into Hordes but tbh Khador sounds bang on the money!

Thanks mate, I'll take a look!

If you are up for it, I say try Menoth if you are looking for a synergistic army that can make it hard for the opponent to cast magic and/or shoot at them, and bring them to insane levels of effectiveness.

If you like many different play styles to try, I say give Mercs a try, as their different contracts offer many different things to each different person.

Also, Khador is a relatively nice choice as well, and if you want more Jack-heavy, I say try Cyriss.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also Skorne if you want to apply the "axe-to-face' method in the game.

You could try Mercenaries. They can run many different play styles, including a slower heavy armor brick style using rhulic centric units like forge guard, highshields, and their warjacks. They can also run the light and fast glass cannon style list using kayazy assassins and/or steelhead cav. Highborn contracts get ATGMs or Longgunners from cygnar for some solid ranged game, or you can just mix and match it all. Plus, they have access to mountains of solos for any occasion as well as an infinitely more diverse history when compared to other factions.

On top of that, since it is your second faction you will either already have some merc models or you will have some merc solos that you can add to future cryx lists.

I went Cryx to Gators. Other than some abilities depending on living models, pretty different.

Also, Convergence has similarities with Cryx in the way units recur, though that is a limited connection at best.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Hmm... got me thinking now guys! Mercs that could also work with Cryx would make sense I suppose. I haven't got any out of faction solos yet but have been told many times that Gorman works well with Cryx! He'd probably be one of my first purchases.

Wrong Eye and Snap Jaw look quite good too so that might lead to Gators I suppose! Will take a look!

I'm going to toss out Legion. You'd be moving from one of the best infantry factions to one of the best beast factions. In Legion you've got a ton of points wrapped in each relatively fragile beast that needs to be carefully used and traded or you end up way down on points, really different from "throw a brick of infantry at them."

It's also has a ton of great tricks and casters, and you'd still be serving a Dragon.

Yeah, but then you'll be labeled as that guy who plays the two best factions and lose a lot of friends.

Hey! Nobody told him buy two ravagores!

Besides, he already plays Cryx. He lost his friends a long time ago.

All of the factions have some amazing casters with amazing dirty tricks. Lists that are going to bring problems you need to see and experience before you're truly ready for them in competitive play.

Cryx just seems to have more of them. I remember the first time I played against eDenny in a journeyman league against a guy dropping her for the second time. And he won. On accident.

Good times! Just gotta learn and prepare for those things.

Well, from what I gather, cryx is all about infantry swarms, so I would imagine the opposite of that would be menoth, which can fields quite a few jacks very effectively I believe.

Trolls don't seem that different tbh. Some troops are tougher, but they're still troops.

That and potentially run Infantry hordes rather well as well. Also put a Reclaimer or two in there and you can use your Menites to fuel your jacks.

I wouldn't go Khador. Your exact method and interactions within the army may be a bit different, but it's still infantry spam. Broadly speaking, Khador has amazing single-wound infantry and mediocre everything else with a couple scary warcasters. Cryx already has amazing single-wound infantry and mediocre everything else with a couple scary warcasters.

Well I suppose the question of a factions playstyle really comes down to opinions and the actually person playing them. When I started Cryx I was dead against using anything but 'jacks which served me well for a while, then I added some solos and was dead against getting into the realms of infantry because I didn't want another 40k... I've since realised that it's not and have started to add some.

I think I'm going to get some Merc solos which also work with Cryx and I'm going to pick up the Merc book too so I can have a proper read. Even if I don't go for a Merc faction in it's own right at least I have more info on the solos I can use out of faction.

Thanks for all the info guys!

If you can, I say start with pMagnus with a Mangler, Renegade, and Talon (this is technically the 'Battlebox', but they do not have one for Mercs anymore) since pMangus is a relatively good caster to learn easy for Mercs and is relatively good with Jacks.

Ran against Durgen with the Earthbreaker last night with my pVayl list. Finding out first hand what Nyxx Hunters can do while "Primed" was a severely emotional experience...

It's merc, it's dwarves, it's "different". He was still running high def infantry(Kayazy and Nyss) to make the list brutal.

Mercs will give you a very broad spectrum of styles and will benefit your main faction at the same time. German is one of the best merc solos, he works for almost all the factions, blind grenade is bonkers. There aren't a huge amount of mercs that will work for cryx but the ones that do are pretty good. Mercs are a perfect second faction to branch into because they support your main faction.

I went against that list once with my new Circle. I lost hard. I kept looking at the field and I never saw an opportunity to do anything.

I'm doing a run of 10 games with pVayl and it's forcing me into some matchups that I wouldn't normally be in. I really thought I had a list that clicked for me better than some of the netlists, but after that experience there's some re-evaluation happening. Typhon instead of a Carnivean would let me kill a lot more Kayazy, or have put more damage on Durgen the one turn I had a chance. Changing the striders for Warspears+UA so I've got multiwound models with high MAT and Chiller...

Bellows crew? I've got 2 points left and they may be one of them.

Word.

I like the army books for the fluff alone even if I don't play the army.
