I played Necrons, my opponent played the Imperial Guard. (I'm going to do my best to give his list but I am not very familiar with Imperial Guard)

My list: 1 Necon Lord with Warscythe. 1 unit of 5 destroyers (3 heavy) 1 unit of 6 scarabs. 3 units of Doom Scythes. 6 units of Night Scythes each carrying 5 Necron Warriors.

He had (and I don't know the unit names): 2 planes, 2 units of tech priests (I think), 3 anti-aircraft vehicles, 1 behemoth tank thing, 3 smaller tanks, and some type of elite HQ tank.

Mission: Relic located. Retrieve the relic to empower Pharon of Tomb World. Eliminate all who stand in the way.

I won the roll and had my opponent place first. Then I did not seize the initiative. I had my lord, destroyers and scarabs on the battle field. He took out my scarabs right away on turn 1.
I moved my destroyers out from cover and fired at his anti-aircraft to little effect.

Turn 2 he brings in a plane from reinforcements. His tank wipes out my destroyers and his plane puts 2 wounds on my Necron Lord.
I bring in 1 Doom Scythe and 4 Night Scythe's from reinforcements. My Doom Scythe wipes out 2 of his 3 anti-aircraft and wounds his behemoth tank thing. My Night Scythes take out his plane.

Turn 3 he only gets in his elite HQ tank. (I had given him a penalty at the start of the game that made it more difficult for him to bring in reinforcements, he had taken outflank). He brings that in to my side and attempts to hit my Night Scythes to little effect. His remaining anti-aircraft takes out my doom Scythe. His HQ tank takes out my Lord.
I then get the rest of my Doom Scythes and Night Scythes in reinforcements. My night scythes drop off warriors under cover by the HQ tank and by the behemoth tank. My Doom Scythes take out his last anti-aircraft tank and his lessor tanks. My Warriors and Scythes to massive damage to his behemoth tank (it is also the transport for the tech priests who are actively repairing it). My warriors do massive damage to his HQ Tank.

Turn 4 he gets no reinforcements. He manages to take out one squad of warriors.
I take out his behemoth tank and his HQ tank. The explosion of the behemoth tank kills the tech priests inside. My warriors and Night Scythes do massive damage to his remaining 2 tanks.

At this point my opponent declares that the moral of his troops has broken and that the remaining tanks retreat from the battlefield as they now have no chance of retrieving the relic. My Necrons return the relic to the Tomb and use it to further awaken more Necrons from their ageless slumber.

I will try a different list next time as I was told that while my list is a very good Tournament list it is overpowered for casual play. Since most of my army is currently proxies I have no problem with this (though I will keep this list in mind if I ever do decide to try a tourney).

Overall though I had fun and it was a good first experience with a army that I designed from scratch with no help.

Good for you, I guess. Spamming fliers is not exactly a fine art.

I'm glad you enjoyed your first game though.

not something I am going to do again. It was just a build I was trying out. I am going to come up with something more balanced. I have lots of room to adjust yet as most of my stuff is proxy. I have 1 Scythe model, 32 Warrior models, 5 Immortal models and 6 scarab models in my collection currently. It will be next month before I can get another kit.

Fair enough. I warn you though, maxed flyers are a very hit or miss army. If you get the wrong matchup in a tourney you will be destroyed, but otherwise you will curb stomp. Armies that either win or lose big really aren't fun to play against though.

Great that you tried them out though.

Yeah...it was fun for a one time thing but I would rather have a more diverse army. I don't know if I am ever going to play in tourneys though. I am enjoying playing casually in my local game shop, but I have heard some very bad things about GW stores and GW tourneys. I just had someone give me about $500 in old nids (I am going to try to convince my daughter to play them instead of chaos marines since I wouldn't have to buy models, If I can't I will sell them). A lot of the models he gave me are the old metal ones. He stopped playing after bringing his army into a GW store and being told he couldn't play it there because they were not the new versions of the models. Since the players at my local store don't care if you have old models (shoot they are letting me use paper proxies, something that would NEVER happen at a GW store) they are actually playable with the codex.

Ah! Proxies! I think you had us going there for a minute. 9 Fliers is a huge investment of money (not to mention time) for a first time player.

You had me thinking you were Bill Gates for a while there

It's already been said, but maxed fliers are a win big or lose big proposition. Cron-Air (as it's called) was a really powerful list type back at the beginning of 6th when there was relatively little anti-air. Outside of a tournament environment, it's still a very powerful list. Maybe a little bit too powerful if your local gamers play for fun instead of playing to win.

I'd play a few more games and get to know the preferred play style (powerful lists or "fluffy" lists) of the gamers you'll be playing against most often before you go out and invest all those £'s or $'s in so many fliers. You don't want to spend all that cash on an army no one wants to play against.

EDIT: On the other hand, if all the other guys around your way play tournament style lists, then you'll have plenty of fun games (for both players) with a Cron-Air list.

EDIT x2: Your daughter will probably not have fun playing Nids against a Necron list full of fliers. In fact, I can pretty much guarantee that she wont. It's a very, very bad match-up for Nids. At least with Chaos Marines she can Vector strike your fliers using her Helldrakes or shoot you down with an allied Soul-Grinder or two from Codex Daemons. Additionally, Nids are a very hard army to play with at the best of times and the current Tyranid codex is certainly not the best of times. It's never been a very good for a beginner, and that's even more true now.

Welcome to the game, and to the Dakka community.

I am NOT going to use the 9 flyer list again. It would get boring quick as no one in the local group could defend. I am working on a more balanced list. 2000 points, and since I have the actual models, something at incorporates at least 1 doom scythe, scarabs and warriors.

I'd recommend wraiths for your next model kit. They are by far my favourite unit in the codex. My friends also enjoying playing against them so that they can figure out how to beat them.

hmm...I'll look into them...I never thought much about that unit so I will have to see what it does.
