Hello peeps,

A bit about my 40k encounter...I have a buddy that has been trying to get me into this hobby for more than 2 years, since 2011 actually, and i finally committed. Im starting with space marines, cause i really love the diversity i can have with them. For now im going to run them as Iron Hands ...As for the critiquing goes, check out my painting...ive never painted anything this small, though i am an artist at heart...please feel free to say anything, as it will help me in the future. Thanks The painting is no where near done, this is just what i have so far...

EDIT: BTW im using my buddy's Black Templar Dude cause my squad has yet to come in the mail to begin my build...
Oh and sorry for the sideways pics..i re sized them and they mustve flipped...

First of all welcome to Dakka Dakka!!

I can't tell you much about Iron Hands since I'm a Blood Angel player. But for you first miniature you put effort into it, and hopefully there will be many more to come!

Crush your enemies, see them driven before you and to hear the lamentations of the women.

Welcome!

Painting for most is all about how it looks on the battlefield, and your first miniature looks promising! It's way better than my first miniature! I think you should paint some more details, as you said you were not done yet, like the teeth of the chainsaw and the purity seal. Looking forward to more!

Looks good, and you're challenging yourself with the battle damage which is a good sign (you don't get better without pushing your limits)

One recommendation would be to spend some time on mould lines, but as I get the impression this is a tester I'm sure you will

Molds lines are caused where the two halves of the mold come together, they leave a witness mark on the model. Carefully look at the helmet of the Marine and you will see a thin line of plastic that shouldn't be there. It can also clearly be seen on the pistol and hand. It isn't a lot of work to get rid of, but it makes the model look a million times better.

It will come in time and experience, but careful prep of your models, ie. cleaning off mold lines and trimming the mold gates from your models will become second nature and an important skill to separate your models from good to great.

It can be removed carefully with a file or scraping with your hobby knife.

Edit: Sorry I keep editing this post so as to not add lots of one line posts.

Hey welcome aboard! Just wanted to go over your process, is the paint over a black base coat/layer of black primer? I also see a lot of washing/glazing, that or the paints are thinned down a bit (which is a good thing, trust us)? On a similar note, are you building up the color by layers of washes, or is this thinned paints over a foundation? And lastly, what kind of brush are you using?

I started off with some primer from a rattle can, it says its easily sandable, so it goes on smooth...

Next i painted it all with a gray layer paint, twice to get the color through.
After that, i got the black wash and covered all the cracks and made sure i put plenty on the recessed detailed areas.
Next i used the brown mud wash. I used this twice and went heavy on the legs to simulate dirty, rusty armor...
After that i added the reds and other detailed colors...but for every color i added, i went over with the black wash and then the brown wash heavily.

The little dude isnt done yet, as i still need to add more details and of course some highlighting.

I used all citadel paints (my buddy's paints) and i used his brushes...I dont know what they were called but i know theyre pretty popular on these forums cause i know ive read them here before, but they have a red handle and theyre made in England..the sizes i used were 00 and 000
