Welcome to Tau.

First thing...magnets. I recommend kjmagnetics.com. I just recently ordered 250 magnets for $34 US. Took maybe 3 days to get my tiny magnets.

Now with your magnets, you can magnetize all of you weapons and hard points so you have unlimited customization / options.

I would recommend the battle force. The Stealth Suits and the Piranha are not optimal but are still good. And since you're not pro Riptide, these units fit right in to add some variety. Also, the Stealth Suit sprue contains 1 marker light drone.

Plan out how you want to build your drones now.

Skyray. Gives you 3 options. With proper modeling / use of magnets, you now have a Skyray, Ionhead, Railhead, or Devilfish in one kit.

I recommend 2 boxes of Kroot. That's 32 models and an easy 3 small squads.

I recommend 1 blister of hounds. They contain 4 dogs. You just need 1 per squad.

As a side note. The Broadside set contains 2 drones. It contains the options for either 2 missile drones, 1 marker light, 1 gun, and/or 1 shield. So choose wisely...plan your army drone builds now. Also, converting gun drones to marker light or shield is easy.

I'd recommend an Ethereal and a Fireblade Cadre...just adds options and are cheap HQs.

I know you don't want Riptides, but I recommend 1 hehe.

edit: misspellings...dranking beer

Thanks for that, whats your recommended size 1.5mm?

Alright thanks, good to know its a decent start at least

what is recommended for FW squads? i was thinking just gun drones since shield drones may die if they fail the save anyway

sounds like a beautiful deal

for the I5 attacks i take it. Also whats the optimum kroot unit size, 8?

is the broadside recommended or should i build it as a missileside?

I'd recommend an Ethereal and a Fireblade Cadre...just adds options and are cheap HQs.
Would you recommend them over the Battlesuit HQ's? Also your thoughts on a converted FW as a Fireblade?

I know you don't want Riptides, but I recommend 1 hehe.

I use Disc Magnets from K&J. 1/10" X 1/16" for battle suit weapons / space marine arms and small stuff.

1/8" X 1/16" for slightly larger items. Such as Broadside Arms. Don't choose a broadside...magnetize so you can use rail or high yield missiles. I prefer HYMP.

I run FWs plain. A unit of 12 (or smaller) with nothing. Drones don't have the range or add much. They can get leadership from an Ethereal's leadership bubble.

Kroot. I use the hounds to give them acute senses. When using Outflank, it allows you to re-roll to see which table edge your arrive on. Kroot are my troop units I use to grab objectives far from my deployment zone. Devilfish cost too much to transport FWs IMO. Also, minimum size for Kroot is 10 warriors. They are also great because you can give them sniper rounds. This allows them to threaten monstrous creatures and generally just make their shooting more effective.

I wouldn't recommend 1 HQ over the other. Depends on your strategy. I like all 3.

Sounds great Lancer thanks for all the info. Will definitely look into Kroot as a primary troops

Now since im not competitive and im all about forging a narrative id like to try a Stealth Assault list:
Shadowsun
3x 6 man stealth suits with 2x fusion
2x 10-man kroot units
4x 10-man kroot units with 1 hound
3x 5 man pathfinder squads with 1 rail rifle
3x skyray gunships
