The fact that they are 12 is probably why they are misleading you with marines and calling us noobs without having any actual info to back it up. A large group of people here have been playing longer than both of their lives combined (yes people have been playing for 25 years) so I'm pretty sure they will know more about the game than a few kids that barely know anything compared to most of us. (I've been playing 40k in the competitive scene for alnost 10 years now and have do very good in most of them yet I am still learning new things about a units power) Chances are they either dont understand the fluff/over exaggerate the meta, or just do not want you to play marines.

Yep. Some people have been playing the game since it created back in the mid 80's.

So yeah, 'bout 27 years max.

Suffice it to say, Space Marines aren't inherently "bad" as in "evil". Perhaps the only faction that could be called that is probably Chaos, and a lot of people would dispute that.

Yeah, that's another thing. The only races they don't call evil are the most evil ones.

The Imperium will kill you because they have to.

Chaos will kill you because they are bored. Or hungry. Or because you are breathing.

Tau will kill you if you don't agree to abandon the Imperium's oppressive doctrine and follow their oppressive doctrine instead.

Eldar will kill you because you aren't Eldar.

Dark Eldar will do very horrible things to you before killing you because you aren't Eldar AND because they are bored.

Tyranids will kill you because they are hungry.

Necrons will experiment on you. Then kill you FOR SCIENCE!

Everyone is a murderous dill weed in the 41st millennium. That's why it's so much fun!

Let's please forget that chaos is not one mass murdering force. They do have actual societies and stuff, it's like DE at times, sometimes the difference between a chaos world is that they don't like the Imperium and give food/money to a CSM force instead of the Imperium's Tax center.

Not really. Besides the ultra-die-hard zealots like the World Eaters, Death Guard, and other main Legions following specific Chaos Gods, Chaos forces of the Lost and the Damned and Chaos Space Marines behave likely psycho pirates. Like a stereotypical pirate island, only owned by eight foot tall demigods/daemons from literal hell.

SM, as in vanilla marines, may not be top tier in the competitive scene, but they are very versatile and can make a list to give any army a good run.

They also did just finish 2nd in a major tournament, so, yeah ...
