Subject: I'm sorry guys, but the emperor needs to go...
What about infiltrating commoragh, and taking the Dark Eldars webway Tech?
If they could successfully pull that off, then sure. I wouldn't place my bets on such an idea being particularly feasible myself, though.
With all the guard regiments / marine chapters I'd think they have more firepower than the DE do.
Yeah, they're not getting in their, and specific sections of it can be shutdown. Not to mention that it'll be HIGHLY unlikely for the IOM to reverse engineer webway tech when they can't even properly reverse engineer their own lost tech.
At least trying seems like progress when compared to just throwing their people away.
It would be completely impossible. Commoragh is located in the Webway, so in order to infiltrate they would need to already have Webway technology.
Also, only a complete fool or lunatic would willingly enter Commoragh.

In other words: At least we get something when we sacrifice psykers to the Emperor. Sending troops into Commoragh really is just 'throwing people away'.

Nice work
Of course the Emperor dying could be the straw that breaks the camel's back and unleashes a full fledged chaos god into the warp. Uncounted trillions of humans drop dead as they are consumed by a deity that demands sacrifice to fuel a war with the other four chaos gods. Reality itself would likely rend open and warp stuff would bleed through as a terrible warp storm unprecedented since the birth of slaanesh sweeps across space-time.

Then the Blue Scribes pop up behind Tzeentch. "Job's done, boss!" and give him back his staff... suddenly, he's restored to being the most powerful Chaos God and curb-stomps the Emperor, before the other three turn (as he had originally feared) and gank him by working together.

We know the Emperor was too weak to contend with the chaos gods when he was alive. This is the reason for the spread of his secular ideals. Taking away the belief/worship of chaos diminishes it. Getting humans into the webway rather than warp travel serves the same end, cutting chaos out of the equation. This was all part of his plan to ascend to be a god of the warp himself, its why he wanted it weakened so. He was using the empire to fuel his own apotheosis.
Whether this would've been good or not for humanity who knows, but ol' Horus didn't take to kindly to the thought and attempted to stop it. With his secular vision failed, the Emperor has turned to eating all the psykers that can be mustered to gain power of his own while simultaneously acting in mysterious ways that encourage people to worship him, gaining further empowerment. The real question is if/when the throne fails, will he be strong enough to survive as a warp entity against the big four who are now stronger than ever?

He's the astronomican, he guides space ships through the void. Without the astronomican Warp Travel would be impossible and the planets of the Imperium would be separated and isolated in space. The Emperor is a necessity.
Alternatively: turns out the High Lords were working with Chaos the whole time and the human souls sacrificed every day to maintain the golden throne was actually a ruse. The ritual was in fact to keep the Emperor from regenerating, because he's a perpetual and all.

Yea, there's already historical precedent in WH40k for Terra going to hell in a handbasket once it couldn't get food imports anymore. It's called the Age of Strife.

That would be so grimdark. He's being prevented from regenerating by the very people he wanted to save.

Not even that, the Emperor is the little Dutch Boy with his finger in the damn, battling Chaos in the warp and attempting to hold the daemons back. Pull the plug and you just screwed every single person who isn't a Chaos cultist/champion immensely.
Plus it's not like the Emperor isn' unaware. If anything he's now a fairly large Warp God.
How confirmed is that. I'm an old player from the early editions and whilst he powered the Astronomicon, there was nothing about him battling daemons in the warp or keeping Chaos gods from running amok. Indeed, he was all but a corpse and the Astronomicon the sole focus of his will. Even his remaining consciousness was a debatable matter.

It would actually be far more in the style of WH40k if the High Lords of Terra weren't doing this because they were in league with Chaos, but out of genuine loyalty and adoration for the Emperor. He's been trying to die so he can reincarnate for ten millennia, but his adherents imprison him in perpetual life support and keep him alive with the deaths of millions of his own kind (psykers).
40K is British, remember! We love our irony.

Ah, I see. It's specifically the Golden Throne where they would come through. I was getting the impression from the wording people used that it was all over the place. Huh, well it's knew to me but I could see that the Golden Throne could be a portal as it projects energy into the Warp, Nit sure that I like the idea that much. But then I actually quite like much of the ancient times to be left uncertain myth. There are quite a few things they've done more recently that I didn't li,e much, such as Khorne being created on Earth in human history if I heard that right.

Well I've read that somewhere too; I've also seen it from Lexicanum; to be honest, it's a bit infuriating to me that on the M2 Page where they state that the first three first came to full awareness was around the Medieval times, they cite Realm of Chaos: Slaves of Darkness without specifying page number; As good a job as the folks over on lexicanum have been doing so far, that citation is quite useless. Even if I do have said book (Realm of Chaos), it'd take me quite some time to find the line stating that.
Luckily they did cite Liber Chaotica as a source on the Khrone page and some lad over at Heresy-Online gave a citation of Khorne's Birth from that book.
If their source is genuine, Khorne being "born" during the middles ages would have been canon since RT; but from I've gathered, even if Khorne was set to have awaken during M2, it's never certain if he was really born "on earth".
edit: nvm, a buddy of mine showed me that line on liber chaotic: "when the earth was made as mud mud by the lifeblood of innocents and wild creatures roamed the deserted lands... the kings and princes turned their armies outside their hollow kingdoms to wage war against each other. The armies of all the lands met in a valley blocked by four mountains to the north and ... to the south. And there they fell on one another... The battle raged long as fortune waxed and waned... The death was so great that the valley itself filled with blood and drowned those who fought in its depth... A multitude raised their shouts to a thousand empty gods. And none replied. For the true god had heard its servants' cry. And its answer was one of bloodlust, power and awesome violence. (Williams, Richard. "Chapter I: The Mountain." Liber Chaotica Complete. Nottingham: Black Library, 2009. 5. Print.)" Which is followed by the lines the other guy gave.

You know, it says a lot when the bloodiest, most oppressive regime imaginable places more importance on the life of a single person than the US.
How can you say this when they throw away soul after soul to this man on life support?
The psykers who do not survive the Sanctioning process were weak, and fit only to feed the God-Emperor. Otherwise, they would have fallen prey to the predators of the Warp, and caused more death and destruction as Daemonhosts until their eventual destruction. It is better here that the one should die so that many thousands more should live.
It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I mean, I'm all for a discussion on whether the constant sacrifices required to keep the Astronomican alight are worth it, or if it's what the Emperor would have wanted, or how people navigated the Warp before he was interred in the Golden Throne (actually quite curious about that, is it ever explained?), but this thread is not going places.
His psyche is what holds it together. When he was alive an strong he didnt need the the Golden throne and thousands of psychic souls everyday to project his light.
On another note, when the Fall of the Eldar came about, twas the Emperor who immediately began the great Crusade, which, although the Warp Storms were abided slightly, would still have been impossible to navigate without his psyche.
