I was probably about 11 years old or so. Sometimes around 2000 I remember it was 3rd ed. A friend played and I decided to try it out. I regrettably picked Dark Eldar and he played Iron Warriors CSM. We also didn't know to use terrain so basically I had a HQ and 2 troops and would die almost instantly due to his AP not giving me and kind of armor save. I still had a blast. Then I switched to Space Marines and it was even more fun. Then I stopped playing for like 10 years.

I started 40K 2nd ed back in 97, when I was 14-15? a friend from high school started showing us these 'space wolf' models and everyone was hooked, thought it was the coolest thing ever. After high school stop playing/collecting. inginted the spark again in 08 when I accidently walked through a GW store in a mall and saw SH 3rd ed release.

Yeah we were bummed out when it was canceled. It transferred to Wizards of the Coast and they released a few things and then canceled it. I think the cost of production was just too high. They could not ask the same kind of prices GW can because they were selling to a different demographic, so they got priced out of the market.

interestingly enough I found a fully painted Space Marine model on the floor outside my High School about 11 years ago, but didn't know what the hell it was. Took it home and kept it on a bookshelf cause the guy looked cool. The Beaky Helmet, the Bolter, the Power Armor. A while later my friend sees it and says to me "Hey, that's a Space Wolf miniature." I research a little, hit up the GW website, and the rest is history.

Would have been early 90's my brother got Space Crusade as a birthday present and as a family would have a game of it on a Friday night.
My brother and his mate then got a copy of 2nd edition when it came out and they showed me how to play (I was quite young at the time).
Shortly after this I got Space Marine for my birthday and me and my friends were hooked. So that would have been 1991/1992........god I now feel old!

1989. My buddy introduced me to a bunch of cool Citadel models and a game call 40K. Crazy and completely over the top and we loved every game we played. I took a break at the beginning of 3rd edition for about a year, but have been pretty much playing 40K for nearly 25 years now.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

I started just last year when I was 15. I had once considered going Fantasy Orcs when I was 13 but the price + the size of the models stopped me. I bought the 40k starter set intent on going DA, but I saw and Ork Vehicle and I at once decided to go Orks. I do not regret my decision at all. Wizards of the Coast got ahold of it. released 3 waves of repainted D&D minis and called it quits. I lost interest a year or so after the cancellation but Heroscapers.com is still going strong. I understand that they've started releasing their own waves, Also they have something called C3G which it Superhero heroscape using Wizkids Heroclix models.

Last year, around March I believe. I'd been thinking of getting into it earlier, but being an introvert I had the constant problem of "buy expensive hobby, have no one to play with."
Then I saw, on my university campus, flyers for a build and paint miniatures event. They provide the miniatures, soda, and pizza, I provide my having nothing else to do with my life.
Thus began my foray into tabletop wargaming. Possibly the best day of my graduate schooling.

Tunneling Trygon

6th grade I bought my first 40k models (I had seen an add for the game a few years back), and slowly built up 500 points of Tyranids to duel a friend of mine who bought guard at the same time. This was 4-5 months before 5th edition was released. I slowly sunk out of the game for a while, then got interested a little before the 5th edition Tyranid codex. I bought that and a Trygon, and built my way into a 1500 list and played my first games using the full rules at an RTT, where I went 1-2. The rest is history I suppose, because now I have over 5k points of Tyranids...

I got in back in '89, at least to GW games. Bloodbowl and Epic were what I actually got into but I bought all the 40K I could. The only thing stopping me from actually getting into 40k was that models were so scarce.

When I was eleven I really got hooked by the Dawn of War series and I have been ever since. After being so intrigued I also began to roam W40K wikis and other lore/fluff sites and I have to say it is absolutely brilliant.
I have yet to get into Miniwargaming ( GW ). Could anyone perhaps help?

It would have been very late 80's in my first year of secondary (so 87/88).
My own story is that my father loved model trains (Fleischmann which are pretty expensive) so when browsing model shops he'd buy me an airfix toy plane or tank. On one of those trips we saw some metal marine figures but bought some dwarfs (he painted 1/2 a figure and got bored, I painted the rest). I didn't even know about GW or WFB then, but eventually I started buying more, then White Dwarf, then I saw Space Dwarfs and naturally bought those... and that was that.
Like many people here I stopped playing for almost 20 years when I thought roleplaying and wargaming would get in the way of meeting women and having a good time. (As it happened where I was It turned our roleplaying was a serious babe magnet and I wish I'd stuck with it - wargaming of course wasn't ;-)
Now I'm glad to be back in the hobby... but I do miss the old days...

Originally in 1989, when I got the box of Space Marines mentioned above. I played until 1992 when I went to college.
I got back into it when my daughter took an interest in 2008. My father had a stroke about a year after that, and I needed something to do while sitting with him that was not work.

Started when I was very young. Not sure of the exact date but it was when the addy of first edition of space crusade came out on tv. Saw it and thought dad and mum I want that for Xmas. After that went a few years and stopped but then started again around 2010 when I found my angels of death codex and it all came back to me
